Mervis and Wisdom a nice 0-7 again with 3 Ks.

All six of the pitchers Ross threw out there yesterday have ERA's of 4.97 or higher, just a brilliant display of bullpen construction by Jed.

I've been ready to move on from Wisdom since last season. Yeah he gets on a heater once in awhile and hits a bunch of homers then he goes through stretches he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. His game log is just brutal right now: Patrick Wisdom Game by Game Stats and Performance | ESPN Had a hot April hitting .258 with 10 HR and has been garbage since.

Mervis hit a homer the previous night so had to have him back out there last night to try and get his confidence going. Hoping Morel is starting to break out of his funk as he came up with some clutch hitting in the game Hendricks threw his gem and had a hit and a walk last night so will see if this is the start of his turn around or not. Not really sure the W/L is going to matter here soon with being 9 games under .500. They'd need to get on a hot streak here quickly to get back into wild card contention and have 6 of their next 9 games against the Pirates with the Orioles sandwiched between those series so taking 4 of those would gain them some ground in the division. I don't think the Cubs have the talent though to get back into the playoff picture, especially with that bullpen. If you want to look at things from a pure record standpoint they have the 4th worst record in the NL and only 2 games ahead of the Rockies for the worst record.

Yeah, its over for this year, they just don't have the talent on offense or anything resembling a bullpen to compete. That 4 week stretch in April was fun but I'm afraid this is who they are.

As much as I enjoyed watching Hendricks nearly throw a non-no Saturday night a part of me was also thinking that I hope he keeps pitching well so maybe they can get something decent for him at the trade deadline as that outing I'm sure some teams took notice of. I doubt the Cubs are interested in picking up his club option year after this season so that also has some value in a trade too as whoever acquires him could potentially get more than just a rental out of him if they wanted too. Always been a big fan of the professor but I think it's probably the right time to move on. Early in his career it drove me nuts when Maddon would pull him early at any sign of trouble and not let him try to work out of it. Eventually he started to trust him more but drove me nuts that he'd rather take his chances with some questionable bullpen moves. Kyle pitches a lot like Maddux used to and in the day of age where everyone thinks you have to throw mid to upper 90's with some breaking stuff to be good he has proven if you can hit spots you can still be successfully throwing below 90 with a good change up.

What's the story with Bellinger? Wasn't it just a bruised knee?

Baseball is the most bizarre sport from an injury perspective. Arguably one of the least physically taxing sports (as opposed to basketball, football, hockey, soccer, etc.) and for some reason it seems like every injury requires 2 months off.

Who knows, the Cubs have a reputation lately of downplaying injuries then these "should only miss a few games/weeks" statements turn into an extended time out. Hoping that does not happen with Steele too but he threw a bullpen session the other day and the reports were he felt good so that is a good sign for him. Bellinger has been out long enough now he'll likely have to do a rehab stint in the minors before he comes back I bet.

If it were me, I would send Mervis down when Bellinger is healthy. Let him play 1st against some RHP while Tauchman plays CF. Definitely not ready to give up on Mervis yet, and this might only be for a month, but let him get right.

I am 100% on the extend Stroman train. I think you still need to add to the top of the rotation this winter even with him. Give me a rotation of FA, Stro, Steele, and Taillon (who its way to early to give up on). Let the young guys fight it out with Smyly for another year and hopefully one of them takes the spot from him.

I also think too many in here are sleeping on Seiya.

I think more optimistic than most but the Cubs should have somewhere between 80-100 mil to work with for 24 and I would start with
Stroman - 27.5 aav
Nola or Urias - 25-30 aav
Matt Chapman - 20? aav

That leaves some wiggle room to add elsewhere if you aren't comfortable with Mervis or PCA. Is it the perfect roster? No but that staff can pitch with anyone.

Unless the Cubs feel Mervis is totally over matched at the major league level, they need to throw him out there at least 4-5 days a week. Let him use 2023 as a learning year and adjust to major league pitching.

The Orioles touted rookie Gunnar Henderson was hitting .180 on May 15 and as of yesterday was hitting .236. The Cubs need to be patient.

I agree with this. I said in a previous post I'd be ok with him going back to AAA, but only for a reset. Get his head right and work on a couple things and come back for the 2nd half and play every day.

The one main criticism I have as Ross as a manager is he has some of the same tendencies that Maddon had managing certain guys. Someone would just have a huge game then they sit them the very next day because of "matchups." Especially with younger guys if they go 3-4 with a homer and a few RBIs I don't care who is on the mound the next day you put that kid back out there and see if he's up to the challenge against a matchup that may not be in their favor. Saw this with Velazquez some last year too, he'd have a huge game then sit the next 2. These guys you bring up from the minors if they are going to have any shot of success in the big leagues can't just be situational players where you only play them when you think the matchup is in their favor. They are used to playing nearly every day in the minors and that keeps them locked in at the plate when they are getting regular at bats. I don't know if part of it is the front office messing with the lineups a bit too, who knows but its something the Cubs have been bad about for years dating back to Maddon's days too where they don't have a consistent lineup most days. I get tweaking it here and there is necessary if you have a favorable match up with some guys but right now can't even keep guys batting in the same spot in the order half the time let alone stringing several games of being in the lineup too.

They are in a development phase right now and I don't see how they are helping development when they don't give some of these guys a fair chance to play everyday when they get brought up. Other than Swanson, Suzuki, Hoerner, and Happ there aren't many guys truly blocking a position right now. Carrying 3 catchers right now too, they've been giving Amaya a decent run this 2nd time up but would just like to see him starting nearly every day right now and see what he's able to do. If he's capable of staying up the rest of the season then either need to trade Gomes or cut Barnhart to free up some more playing time at catcher.

Absolutely agree. I understand why they aren't ready to get rid of Barnhart, as they are one injury away from a big problem behind the plate.

But there is no reason they can't keep 3 catchers and have Barnhart only play once a week. Let Amaya play every day between catching and DH.

They don't want to push Bellinger at all. They want him at 100% and hope he plays well the end of June and into July so they can trade him.

Bellinger playing 1B in Iowa tonight. What the...?

Either want to limit his running in the field or possibly get him ready to play 1B and send Mervis down when they activate him? I think Tauchman does not have any minor league options left and I don't see him being DFA and sent through waivers so the only logical moves would be to demote Rios or Mervis or DFA Barnhart.

I hate everything about it.

I dont know what the point of a DH is for the Cubs if ours is worse than most pitchers.

Master Boney is hitting .158 with 1 RBI the entire season. No idea where they are getting some of these players.

Why they chose to call him back up let alone DH him tonight is mind boggling. Why Rios is wasting a spot in Chicago too when he hardly plays anyways let alone get a hit when he does.

*edit: forgot Rios is on the IL but won't be shocked if he stays in Chicago still when they activate him

Think Rios will go from IL to DFA.

Anybody else think Mervis looks like Garza?
