Not seeing anywhere in Ames that got 4 inches unless you aren’t talking about rain?
A 5 second Facebook search yielded many results of 4+ from Ames to Story City. I would say you didn't look very hard, but we all knew you would be the contrarian regardless of how much rain actually fell.

Our backyard rain gauge showed right at 6 in. Of course the inches side is marked in eighths instead of tenths so that 6 in. could be way off. Ames. And now just as humid as yesterday even with wind.

That’s the site I use. It is probably not exact but good enough for me.
This site had some +3.80" recorded on the west side of Ames. Often higher amounts are averaged out in the model. Not unrealistic that some 4" plus amounts have been reported in the area.
