Okay any of you professional meteorologists. Looks like the front edge has picked up speed. Latest warning says moving east at 55mph with gusts up to 60 mph. That puts it in Ames in a little under an hours.

I'm in Cedar Rapids. Could this thing hold up moving east into a long lived straight line wind event. I don't want to use the actual term.

Thanks for posting Boxster. I'd be curious to hear from some of the "veteran/seasoned" posters on this site if they remember this storm and if they have any stories.

That would have been the storm that took our power out for 2 weeks. My dad, his brother, and their dad all had livestock on their farms. We got the generator overnite because dad had both morning and evening chores. My aunt and uncle moved in with us for those 2 weeks because their kids were even littler than us. I don't remember when the county got us plowed out but I know it was always the loader tractor and the generator tractor going between farms in tandem to make it easier.

I'm guessing the county probably got us opened up fairly soon then we just used the tractors to go through the redrifting. Not alot of pickups with blades back then if I remember right but I was pretty little then.
Do remember dad having to use the loader to clear the drifts off the fence to keep the cattle in the lots the drifts were hard enough they could walk over them.

Heck of a thunderstorm blowing thru right now. HIGH winds right before it. Still have power so no complaints from me.

Front starting to push into West Ames. Winds calmed to an eerie level for about 5 minutes. Now picked up substantially, lots of lightning, and a torrential downpour.

The storm didn’t wake me up at 11, it was our frugal neighbors turning on their outdoor light by their side door of the garage, which happens to be near our bedroom. I decide to see what the heck they were doing. It is pouring rain out she has a raincoat on, she pulls a downspout end off and starts collecting water out of the gutter and pours it into an empty 5 gallon kitty litter container. WTF! It’s no wonder I have a drinking problem with the strange neighbors on each side of me.
