***Official 2021 Weather Thread***

it looks like my plans to smoke some chicken wings for the Super Bowl won't happen now.

Thermal blanket is on my smoker. Plan on wings and ribs. Smoker app has a climate control setting to for cold and warm weather. Plus my smoker is right outside the back door of the garage so it is easy access to it. Putting on some buckboard bacon around 4:30 tomorrow morning in hopes of having it done before the blizzard hits.

Exactly 10 years ago we got about 16" of snow in Clarence. My last day of work was Feb 2. I had a ticket to fly to Florida from CR on that morning. I cleared a shovel-width path to the street.

I was sure my flight would be cancelled, but there was no indication on the web. My sister and BIL came to pick me up. They got between Mechanicsville and Stanwood on 30 and the traffic was stopped. So they turned around and went back to CR and down 380 to 80 then up from there. Then back to CR again the same way.

Fortunately they/we had planned on possible problems and I just made it in time.

I'm surprised it wasn't closed. That much snow today shuts down almost everything.

Also to add about that cold 25 years ago......was driving a POS K car and one of front brake lines busted(cold), and for a week was using my emergency brake to stop the car because just to cold outside to work on it....and all the shops were packed, if even open. I remember this because about 5 days later finally get to it because the temps were in.............the 50's and 60's!

Do people not have a smoker with a 2 inch insulated firebox and made with 1/4 rolled steel? :jimlad: Although a thermal blanket does sounds like a good idea for these brisk days.

I'm sure most of you will be thrilled to hear the last run of the GFS model has 20"-30" of total snowfall over most of Iowa from now through the next 16 days.
As long as it leaves the Iowa/MN central border alone, it can snow however much it wants. Licky boom boom down.

So this is five days. Is it supposed to start tomorrow and through end of Monday?
Yes- it says on the bottom left corner the experation date. So 6pm Monday the 8th is the cutoff time for this map. The majority of snowfall on this map is mostly for Sunday/Monday.

EDIT: I dont believe this map at all! You would think that the NWS would be all over this already if this was the case.

Its a long ways out, but yeah it'd be something monday.

The snowfall totals in that seem to be derived from the Kuchera ratio model (which, our resident weather experts can confirm, iirc tends to be pretty agressive on snow totals). A 10:1 ratio gets this

This would sure be something though

The local NWS is saying maybe a couple of inches Sunday followed by a potentially "significant" system Monday. And weatherstreet.com is calling for the foot+ by Tuesday morning. So there is noise. I would imagine that....IF....this does come to fruition the snow ratio's will be higher than 10:1 considering the forecasted temps. and someone just might get pounded.

@FDWxMan I am confused...any insight as to why DVN didn’t upgrade to a blizzard warning?
DVN forecasting the snow to be a little more heavy/wet and not blow around as much...I guess.
They say one thing one place, doesn't really match their discussion though.

It's kinda just nit picking with blizzard "criteria" I guess, so we get the competing warnings.

Sounds about right...
