Is Javan considered a high expectations player? I honestly am asking.

I fully expect JJ to start and play 20+ minutes which qualifies. Javian has the size/skill combo that could get him to the NCOY discussion if he progressed in his year off and even has some NBA potential per scouts. I'm looking forward to seeing him in Hilton.

I'm not sure if it'd change the mindset of some. Some fans only care about the success of the current team / season and block out everything else, allowing themselves to be miserable and think nothing will ever get better.

Yeah, we could have an amazing year next year, and the first sign of adversity in the following season would bring them back out of the woodwork.

I think a lot of people just enjoy being angry and/or sad.

The past 10 years, we've had some very nice seasons. We've won some Big 12 Tournament Titles, have competed at the top of the conference, have had multiple NCAA appearances with a couple of Sweet 16 runs, however fans want more. And not saying they shouldn't want more, but people are now diminishing good / successful seasons because they "think" we should've would've could've gone farther in the NCAA tournament or possibly won a regular season title. We've been a bit spoiled to be honest. For 10 years we haven't had many struggles or adversity. Now that we are having adversity, some fans are quick to jump ship, stop supporting the team and coach, and want to move onto a new coach when he's made the tournament 3 out of 5 years.

Me too. Unless Prohm hits a home run on the grad transfer market this spring I expect Johnson to be a starter on next year's team. He's potentially the kind of player this year's group just doesn't have.

why is it whenever someone jumps to defend Prohm they always list out all his accomplishments but disregard the lows we’ve had under him? You’re right, all those highlights happened under Steve Prohms guidance but let’s also acknowledge the lows when we evaluate Steve as a HC

  • 18 point loss at Hilton to Milwaukee. 196th on KenPom
  • Loss to FAMU at Hilton. 312nd on KenPom Worst home loss in school history?
  • 26 point loss to KU at Hilton. 3rd worst in school history at Hilton 46 total points combined loss for KU series
  • 2nd worst loss to Iowa at home in school history
  • 57-20 at Hilton
  • 60-64 vs p6 opponents

Cmon guys don't do this to yourselves again. J Johnson is not the savior or some magical missing piece. He avg 10 ppg shooting 35% from 3 against crappy teams in a low level league.

Has he improved in his off year? I hope so. But this kid is going to have to make a serious jump to be a contributor in any meaningful way next year.

I would be pretty happy if he was just an average level Big 12 starter.

I do not think anybody is depending on him to be a star.

That has to be Bolton or Conditt based on their raw talent, one of the freshmen surprising us greatly, or somebody new brought into the program this spring.

I'm certainly not disregarding any of those. I would say the opposite in the fact that those types of things cloud up the fact that he has the same amount of tournament success / conference tournament titles as the last coach who manned our sidelines. I'd also say that most of those lows are happening in two seasons with teams that ended up losing a boat load of talent. If Steve continues this sort of thing with not being able to keep talent and consistently having a down year following a good year, then yeah it's probably time to move on. But using two bad years and disregarding 3 other years wouldn't necessarily be fair.

I think it is tough to tell because he has the frame and it appears he can shoot decently from outside but that was on a bad troy team. I have no idea how he translates to the Big 12.

When we evaluate guys, we always seem to focus on the offensive end of the court. I get that, especially with the shooting woes we have had this year (how many games could we have won if we hit for a game as many threes as we hit against Kansas in the first half? However, my main point is we need to be better on defense. Can we stop dribble penetration? Can we get longer on the wings so we can challenge the 3-ball better? Can we rebound better?

When we are playing multiple guards/wings, we often have at least three guys 6'3" and under. We have a shortage of contributing wings in the 6'5"-6'7" range. I miss having a Dustin Hogue that will go out and seemingly get 7 to 8 boards or more a game. He certainly was more of an offensive threat his senior year as his three ball became more consistent, but he was impactful from a defense and rebounding sense as a junior. While we need better shooting, our lack of D killed us in games it could have kept us in, such as recently against Oklahoma. We all remember Matt Thomas for his shooting the three ball, but even when he struggled in man defense his first couple of years, he could still rebound decently. How is Javan viewed defensively?

That is why Prohm recruited length and versatility with the current class. Johnson comes off of redshirt and he is 6'6. Blackwell is 6'6, Dubar is 6'6, Walker is 6'5. That is the kind of length they need to be better at getting deflections, blocks etc and can allow them to switch a lot on defense.

It really is random.

Shayok went from bench/rotation guy to first-team all-Big 12.

Kane went from "who?" to an All-American.

Then there's guys who just... well, not much of anything'd.

Hines made a really good point on his podcast yesterday on how Leech's and Andersons scholarships would have been much better suited on sit out transfers.

How different would the mindset of the fan base be if we had a couple of these kids sitting out this year?

Seems to me this is just Monday morning QBing. Unless he had insight last spring that Anderson & Leech wouldn't last the summer, this is silly comment to me.

We contacted them and didn't land them, it wasn't a choice by Prohm. Besides, Anderson and Leech were fall commits, these guys were still with their current teams when they were signed. These players would replace Grill and Bolton.

IMO hitting 35% from 3 point range is pretty solid. Sure I would love to have a bunch of guys who hit 40%- but IMO that is elite.

I took a quick glance and Javon hit 35.3% on 150 attempts in 2018/19, not bad for a high volume shooter. As a freshman he hit .43.8% on 80 attempts. If he can shoot somewhere in between for the Clones - he will make ISU better.

I think taking a chance on Leech was understandable giving the situation.

It's good they moved on quickly but using a fall commitment spot on Luke Anderson is a big miss. Like Hines said, if we had a solid backcourt player sitting out coupled with Javan Johnson and a good recruiting class we'd all feel a lot better about next year. Now without that, a lot hinges on finding that backcourt piece in the immediately eligible market - which is a lot more competitive.
