OFF THE RECORD: Royce White

How many of you actually suffer from anxiety, depression, or some other form of mental health issues? Unless you personally have been affected by them you will never truly understand what it is like to have to live with them. I personally think that is why there are so many people being mis-diagnosed or never diagnosed, which depending on the person, and the health issue(s) can lead to some serious issues (i.e. school shootings, suicides, etc.).

Say what you want to about Royce, but I’ll always be a fan. I also give him credit for standing up for a cause that most people don’t understand and never will. He sure makes himself an easy target by doing so when he could have easily just taken the money and walked away. Stay strong Royce and thanks again!

I have and the interviewer CW has talked about his occasional issues. That didn't even come up in the interview. Most people will deal with these issues at some point in their lives.

The problem I have is that nobody really wants solutions to the real problem. They all want to talk and raise "awareness" (IE money) and never really solve the problem. Perhaps some do but the entire industry is geared to keep raising money to not solve the problem.

I've posted this in other threads but if you do experience some symptoms like anxiety, muscle cramps, teeth grinding etc. try a good quality Magnesium supplement. I don't know why but the one from Jarrow with 50 mg K, 100 mg Magnesium Malate, and taurine has worked the best.

This reminded me and I checked and they finally have it back in stock after like 6 months of trying. I just purchased 4 more bottles. And no I have no interest in any of these companies.

There are several herbal supplements that have provided me with more relief than the typical antidepressants I've been prescribed. They have also made me much less foggy.

Ashwagandha, St John's Wort, magnesium (as you mentioned), Bacopa Monnieri, and L-Theanine have all helped tremendously.

Do your own research on these to determine if they are a good fit for you, but they are all relatively safe.

Awareness to me means just talking about it. The more people talk about it, those who suffer from the issues start to feel like they're not alone, and can talk to someone else about their problems. Just taking a look at recent history, it seems like people are more open about talking about the issue of mental health than they were just 10 years ago.

I have some Ashwagandha but have not tried the others. I think the Ashwagandha is more for enhancing your mental abilities and harder to determine the effectiveness.

If you have an actual bit of an anxiety period coming on (and I almost always have these when I wake up with a short pain in my chest) I have some Kava on hand. This really helps calm your nerves in the short-term even when I know or believe what is wrong. It has some more possible side-effects and probably isn't recommended long-term.

I have struggled with anxiety and depression ever since my junior year of high school. As a diehard Toronto Raptors and Iowa State fan I appreciate someone like DeMar DeRozan much more than you Royce. Instead of continually whining and ******** about the lack of preferential treatment anxiety sufferers receive in the NBA and in life, DeMar goes out and sets an example to all of those that suffer by pushing through, accomplishing franchise records, and using the platform he's created to reach out to those that struggle.

Hearing about Royce struggle through the same thing I was beginning to face in high school was comforting for the fact that I really wasn't alone in all of this. The fact that you pushed through and were able to have the success that you had for my favorite team helped push me to continually challenge myself. Without your story I am not sure I would have graduated high school at the top of my class. I'm thankful for your outreach while at Iowa State.

However, since graduating high school, moving on to college, and entering the work force I'm glad I haven't adopted this "poor me" attitude you've adopted since your time at Iowa State. Mistakes and regrets are enhanced living a life with anxiety and depression, but owning up to your mistakes and not playing this victimization card you've fallen into allows others to take your cause more seriously, rather than turning them off to it.

That being said I will always be thankful for the service any and all former cyclones have contributed to this University and wish them nothing but the best. In your own words Royce, "Be well."

1. The concept of “pushing through” mental illness without the proper tools and support systems is why people not only commit suicide, but also long lives full of dysfunction and psychological torment. Also, it’s another common precursor to long term coping mechanisms like alcohol, drugs and other vices that aren’t efficacious. They tend to compromise the health in a delayed fashion.

I’m not sure if that “pushing through” is even DeMar DeRozan’s “message”. Actually I’m not sure what his message is, other than advocating for people to not feel ashamed in asking for “help”. However, if that was his message, I don’t give a f**k how successful he’s been, it surely wouldn’t be a competent message.

2. Ironically, it was my High School/Family Physican that taught me not to let the fear of being characterized as a “whiner” deter me from advocating for myself. Being disagreeable is one of the big 5 character traits that’s an indicator of professional success. It’s also necessary in communicating honestly with those around you in your personal life and even more importantly... communicating with yourself.

3. Asking for policies to acknowledge mental health isn’t “preferential” treatment, it’s a basic treatment in seeking a adequate comprehensive health standard.

You’re WAY off base. The “eat ****” to get ahead cliche is mentality likely to produce unidentified and displaced resents. Which is why MOST people are harboring resent and displacing it. No back bone... then they resent themselves for not having a back bone as a bonus.

Be Well

LOL at thinking you’re better than Leonard, Green and Davis, what a hack

Why don’t you help us qualify players overall game... with your supreme basketball evaluation skills? Your propensity to blurt is sufficient enough information to deduce that you’d probably have a very lackluster methodology when it comes to the many nuisances of a basketball game.

Don't mind him, he's an Iowa fan. A place that hasn't produced a good basketball player since the 1980's

Just listened. Royce is smarter imo than he is taken for. His message can get misconstrued because of many factors. I’m happy he’s part of the legacy of ISU and shouldn’t be attacked but just asked questions. Did he make some mistakes? Maybe? Idk? I’ve made a lot of mistakes and don’t have people picking them apart and I’m gonna do that to him. Keep killin it on the court Royce. I will be watching this summer and am pumped for the first thunderous dunk.

Just every metric.

I think there are really two sides to how people view Royce. It's either you buy into what he's saying and admire him for fighting for a cause like mental health or you just think he's playing the victim.

The thing is, he probably has great ideas on how to fix some of the issues with mental health, but it's how the message is directed. If he wanted his message heard, you build positive relationships with the higher ups and go from there. Life is so much about networking, that if Royce built positive relationships before making the requests he did, it could have changed his path in the league and the outlook on mental health.

Yea... how dishonest is that? Superficial positive relationships with the “higher ups” as a prerequisite for truth. The problem with that is, when it’s inconvenient... the higher ups won’t like it no matter how you gift wrap it. People have no concept of how pernicious small dishonesties can be compromising to your moral compass.

Everyone needs to realize that message board posters, especially the highly negative ones, are the very small MINORITY of fans. That's why they teach them now to ignore social media, especially ones where a name isn't even tied to what is being said. Too many trolls as well (hey I see a player here, let's see if I can get a rise out of him!).

That’s also the mental health conversation right there... ironically. So much to be examined in this strange phenomenon of trolling culture.

This happens in the business world ALL the time now. They don't really care that much about what you can do or what you know they really just want to know that you can get along and not make waves.

Wow! “Getting along and not making waves...” that mindset mixed with the epidemics of dehydration, sleep disturbance, caffeine, alone are enough to make an argument that “zombie apocalypse” is already upon us. You’re primed and ready for the next murderous authoritarian regime for sure. Lmao

I thought it was a great listen. I think Royce was right about just about everything, you just have to listen to what he’s saying and not be distracted doing other things (CW typing).

FWIW, the typing was taking notes on what Royce was saying. Dude says A LOT and I wanted to keep track for follow-up questions. Not a perfect way to do it....I prefer to make these interviews actual conversations ... not just one planned question followed by another, if that makes sense.

All of this is absolutely spot on.

I have a serious question for all those challenging Royce in this thread. Since we are all "cyclone fanatics" if another recruit with his same talents but same mental "issues" was on the table, would you want a borderline McD all American or just say no.

If you say no, are you really a fan, or better question, do you just deny there is a mental heath issue or just like the NBA not want to deal with it?

If you say yes, STF up and support this Cyclone

I agree with your point about work culture now. People should be comfortable with speaking up. This is especially a problem in the corporate world.

One question I have is did you read cyclone fanatic a lot when you played? If you did, what was the most memorable thing you read on here?
