Obesity

Isuno1fan...you and I are freaks. What I mean is that we both exercise religiously. The vast majority of people don't even want to walk from their car to their work place if the distance is more than 50 feet. They expect to be able to take a magic pill to lose all those pounds and would never consider adhering to an exercise program to try to shed pounds.

You know the people I love. The ones who park as close as possible to the exercise facility in June to go walk on a track. I will give them a pass in the winter, I do the same thing.

Like you said, people are lazy. I prefer to think that people need to have exercise as a regular part of their routine rather than "hitting the gym." Going to the gym is great, but I think it is better to have a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately if you are stuck in an office all day (as many jobs are), you don't have much choice.

Some tips I would give people (as some have already mentioned):

-Avoid pop (can't believe how many heavy people drink tons of it)
-Don't eat late at night
-Drink enough water
-Get enough sleep

These are really basic things, but most people don't seem to do them. I also saw somewhere a long time ago that you actually burn more calories sleeping than watching TV, not sure if this is actually true.

Here is a question. How many of you weigh yourself everyday? I do and have for the last 20yrs. If I'm a couple lbs up one day, I just hold back a little the next day. Pretty much maintained my weight since graduating college 20yrs ago at 170lbs.
I also exercise religiously, but I really don't understand how folks let themselves get so out of hand weight wise.

This.

I'm on a big workout/diet plan right now because was very unhappy with my blood pressure.

I've dropped 20 pounds in about 60 days and it's not rocket science. I've been exercising about 6 days a week an hour an day. I've also been watching my diet particuarly calories and sugars.

Blaming corn is stupid. I had three ears of corn tonight for dinner and total calories was 360. One Big Mac in comparison will be 540 calories and if you throw in fries and a sugared drink, add another 710. That one meal at McDonalds is almost more calories then I eat in a whole day now.

People just need to exercise more, eat less, and be smarter about what they eat.

P.S. My blood pressure was down to 104 over 62 today which is excellent.

I normally do. I really need to start running or something. If not to lose a little weight, just to be in better shape.

I think it's good practice to weigh yourself everyday. That way you can hold yourself accountable and you can catch any fluctuations before they get too out of hand.

Of course I suppose some folks just don't care what they look like.

Thats how we should fix it. If you are under a certain pound you can park closer to walmart. The heavier the farther you have to walk.

I like it! :)

It is kind of a pet peeve of mine that people will wait 3 minutes for a close parking spot when they could have just parked, walked and been inside in that time.

Weighing yourself on a regular basis is a good idea, but you can make yourself crazy weighing daily. I've lost over 75 lbs since the beginning of the year and I got myself into the habit of weighing daily (sometimes more than once) and found that it can wreak havoc on your emotions/mind because your weight swings considerably on a daily basis. I can get up in the morning and be 4-5 lbs lighter than when I go to bed that night. It is amazing how a person's body weight can be altered depending on the type of food and mostly liquid taken in during the day. Unless you are eating an ungodly amount of really ****** food you aren't going to gain a pound or pounds of fat in a day's time at a rate of 3500 calories equaling a pound of fat. Monitoring your weight consistently and keeping track of it so you can determine any trends is probably a better approach as you can get a better idea of your actual weight by averaging it out over a couple of days/weighings.

I like the people who are heading to the exercise facility...and use the elevator instead of the stairs.

I agree corn syrup in almost EVERYTHING is a big culprit but one of the biggest that no one mentioned is our car centric lives we lead. No one has to walk anywhere anymore. It used to be that people walked the corner store(s), their kids walked or biked to school, there was some walking in getting to or from work (i.e...to the bus stop), etc. We build our cities now in a way that is helping to make us fat.

There's a huge difference between corn on the cob and high fructose corn syrup, both in nutrition and consumption.

Sugar is the problem. You could get rid of corn syrup, and replace it with cane sugar or sugar beets and you'd have the same problem.

My beef is with people who blame it all on corn. Throw in that people exercise 1/10 of what they did 100 years ago and eat the same with bigger portion size and no wonder we have problems.

You go to an Homish farmsted and watch what they eat(more sugar and calories than you suspect) and yet most of them aren't fat. It's because they have a lifestyle that forces exercise.

i heard a lady complaining to a college student at ISU that was parked in a stall in her lot. she wanted the student to move so that she could park closer to the door so she didnt have to walk as far. she also ******* that it was an injustice to herself since she paid for a stall in that lot even though she wasnt assigned a particular stall. and keep in mind she was probably 5' 7" and at least 250 lbs

People eat terribly in this country.

I'll get lunch with my co-workers quite a bit, and last week for lunch, two of my coworkers (who are big guys) got a steak sandwich and a bowl of soup. The steak on the sandwich was probably 8 oz of beef covered in cheese, and the bowl of soup was plenty. I myself just got a bowl of soup and was plenty full. I have no idea how they put down that AND a steak sandwich.

I think weighing yourself everyday is just absurd. If you're losing or gaining a couple of pounds in one day, then you have a problem. Its just not healthy. I weigh myself once a week and its just fine for me.

Seriously, and I don't know how to put this tactfully, people put a serious hurting on their colon, which causes all sorts of problems.

You think Iowa is bad, go down south. I spent the better part of two months in Mississippi earlier this year. Overweight and better (i.e. Normal sized people) are in the distinct minority. The majority of people are obese to morbidly obese. One look at a restaurant menu will tell you exactly why, as well. They fry things I didn't even know you could.

couldnt agree more. if you are losing more than maybe 5-6 pounds a week than theres a good chance youre starving yourself. unless you happen to be on one of those insane workout regiments and actually eating healthy i suppose

I'm 5'10" and am around 135-140 lbs (depending on the day) and 21 years old and I can not gain an ounce to save my life. Does this mean I'm blessed or will it catch up with me sometime? I mean I have tried lifting weights, taking weight gainer and eating a ton. I want to weigh around 160-170 lbs.

I will say being really skinny is kick *** at times, like when running, jumping, making quick lateral movements, dancing and basically doing anything that requires agility or athletic movements. But I would also like to be able to defend myself...

As for obese people, I don't have much respect for people who let themselves go like that. They also show that they don't really respect themselves either. If I ever got to be more than 170lbs, I would do anything possible to stop gaining weight because I respect myself.
