NOTES from today's scrimmage

What ever happened to Quinton Pompey? I haven't seen him anywhere after being a fairly good recruit according to Rivals.
Redshirted last year as a true freshman and IIRC spent most of the year rehabbing his knee. I would guess he doesn't make huge contribution this year, especially since DT is such a hard position to be effective at as an underclassman.

He was in the practice videos. Hes only a freshman. Not expecting him to really play much this year after seeing his vids.

Ok, just curious. I didn't see him on the CF depth chart, and Brandon Jensen is the number two guy as a sophmore. So I would have liked to see him at 3. But it looks like between NT and DT, there are a lot of upper classmen. Does anyone thing Quinton Pompey will be a future contributor?

I don't see any reason why not. He might just take a little longer to develop due to his injury. Probably one of the reasons we were able to get him late in the recruiting process.

I was looking at the depth chart. Two things. They have Jevohn Miller listed as a Sophomore, isn't he a redshirt freshmen? Also, are those wts accurate or are they from the spring?

I believe Pompey is working himself back into shape after missing so much time with the injury. It's not that uncommon to get out of playing shape when you can't run hard on your knee.

Miller played last year on special teams so he is a true sophmore.

As for redshirting players. With the type of recruits that we get at ISU we need to redshirt them and develop them as much as we can before they start. Our advantage against the 4 and 5 star laden teams to the South will be having veteran players who are perfect fits for our system. Texas can get away with promising early playing time because 5 star players are usually talented enough to make up for mistakes. ISU's strategy is developing 3 star players into solid starters. That takes time. It will be rare that we will be able to bring in the type of recruit that can start or get significant from day one. If the staff does have that situation arise they will probably tell the kid what they tell most recruits. If you are good enough you will get a chance to prove it in camp.

I don't think the staff is completely against playing freshmen though. They were pretty close to playing Bundrage and JQ Daniels last fall. The staff just knows that those guys will be that much better with a year of physical and mental development. It's better to have that extra year at the end of a players career when they should be at their physical peak for a college player. I'd really love another year of Knott and Klein if the depth at LB hadn't been so horrible when they came in.
