No respect or almost there??

I think our staff is doing really good things on offense and defense.

Oklahoma protected their defense by limiting their offense, but still, we should take that as a step forward. We had a offense they felt they should react to.

Almost there is a subjective term, but lets say that means 6 wins. I think that is a realistic expectation by 2018.

Even with our scrapped together o-line this year, our offense has been OK. I expect our o-line to be better next year and with the returning skill players, we can be a team that consistently scores 30ppg and 5 wins is a reasonable expectation.

Whats going to hold this team back is the d-line. JaQuan Bailey may be the only Big12 level starter on the existing roster teady to play starter minutes for 2017.

Jamahl Johnson and Joshua Bailey have potential, but not sure they will be ready to play starter minutes next year. We need the two JUCO DT recruits to be starters in 2017, but it's not often you bat 1000 with JUCO recruits.

There isn't much depth at DE either. A healthy Waggoner helps, but not sure he is a Big12 caliber starter. He is an effort guy, so an off-season in the weight room, could get him there. So for the 2017 DL to be solid, we need a couple other DE's to emerge this off-season.

There's a lot of good stuff on this team. But the OL and DL are not deep/consistent/good enough, and games are won/lost in the trenches.

Are they "almost there"? Not this year. To me "almost there" means add one guy, or just play a little better and you are a top 25 team. That is not this team this year.

Are they "almost there" in terms of being on the right track? I think so. I am encouraged by what I have seen with this new coaching staff. I do think that as they get more linemen recruited & developed, the wins will happen.

Don't sell yourself short, you also have the Browns to watch. :D
Yea, no kidding. Have been a Browns fan since Leroy Kelly, then the Cardiac Kids etc. etc. I will never change teams no matter what happens. You never know what might happen....The Browns are perfect so far this year:(

I've been critical of some things with this staff and team to the point where I've thought I was being unfair. At this point, to say this team is anything but close, is plain wrong. Things got much better against TCU and with the exception of two plays against Texas, this team has been competitive with everyone. Sure, they aren't close to being a top 25 team based on wins/losses but when you look at how competitive they are on the field, it's there. I thought going into the offseason this should be a bowl team. That was before they lost 3-4 starting OL, a starting LB and a starting WR. A few plays here and there and they are a bowl team. That doesn't really matter and they know that but this team was dealt a **** hand from an OL standpoint and they've somehow been competitive.

I think we're still two years from respectability. I watch at this point because I still like seeing them compete. ISU obviously has a lot of fans like this, to get a crowd like they had tonight for a Thursday game for a 1-6 team.

I would agree with at least two years and maybe three years before we really get a winning tradition started at Iowa State

When fans leave their driveway and are more excited about tailgating than the game, Its that mindset and tradition that only Winning Football Games at home over a 20 years span will erase.

Go Cyclones Beat the Jhawks

Wow - almost where? There is a difference from being a "debbie downer" and a realist. We are in mode of hoping - yes hoping - to beat Kansas. We are not "almost anywhere" . 4-5 years before this team finds stability and wins past 6 a season. Please go back in history to all the glowing comments made about LanRam last year and replace with Park. He is a project who was out of football for a reason. We are seeing why - he is not consistent and may never be. The OL and DL and LB positions are weak and have no depth. That is reality and cannot be fixed with a CF poster's "belief" it will be better next year- it may be but we have not seen it so I am not counting on it. Is it possible we win more next year? Yes - is it probable we win 3-4 ? Yes - Bowl game - doubtful at best. 3 B12 wins at minimum and sweeping non-con? Really? I would love to see it and will buy tickets again - but will not "bet the house"!

Nobody would Bet The House that this football program will get turned into a winner....But just remember my friend that No One thought any coach could win at KState....but with the right coach and staff any football program in this country can be turned into a winner...

But just remember that Winning over the long term is a whole different animal.....Go Cyclones puleez bring a victory back from Lawrence

The default measure of success for many ISU fans is our great attendance or the comparison of other teams lack of attendance. Iowa filled the stadium for 20 straight years and no winning record.

Wrong Iowa Did Not fill the stadium thats just another myth created by the locust street liar and the eastern media

My brother in law went to a lot of those games and the stadium was half empty ...most choke eye fans had given up on the program and until Earle Bruce beat the chokes *31-0 in kinnick their was no interest in turning the football program around......

*and yes I was their in kinnick that day...it was a great day to be a cyclone

I think it is pretty obvious we are improving and show signs of being an average (6-6) type team. However, I also think the conference is down making the scores look close this year.

So here is my question. Are we not getting respect from good teams and they are not even preparing for us, or are we just a step away from winning some big games?

Besides the second game of the year we have been in dang near every game with, for the most part, a better than average chance to win.

I think the respect is there to a degree. It's kind of a gray area, where the really good teams know they can't just show up and assume the W but they don't necessarily have to bring their "A" game either. They have a wider margin for error than they might against other opponents.

I'm not sure if they're just a step away from consistently winning. There's still some pretty big talent deficiencies in some critical spots, and it'll take time for the young talent already on board to develop. We'll see, but I think 6 wins and a bowl trip next year is an optimistic expectation for the staff and players. The big leap, if it's to happen, should come in 2018. For now we can live with the team steadily improving and being competitive. It's not much, but it's a start.

I think I would go with them being on the "right track". The way this staff is recruiting I think they will put the necessary focus on recruiting the OL and DL. In a few years we will have quality depth and that when we'll really be able to see the payoff.

I like seeing that we've been close in our losses even being outmanned in several games. That shows that the effort is there, even if the horses are not.
