Nightmare in Maryville

City is certainly distancing itself from the county.
City releases statement on assault case - News - The Maryville Daily Forum - Maryville, MO - Maryville, MO

The outcome of this case lies not with the City of Maryville, but with the judicial system and the county prosecutor. In regards to the fire that destroyed the Coleman's home, it was fortunate that there was no loss of life.
Maryville's volunteer fire service responded to the burning home and did their best to extinguish the fire in short order. Unfortunately, the home was destroyed and due to its location, further investigation rests with the Nodaway County Sherriff's Office.

From the original kc star article, the boy admitted the 13 year old said no several times..

Yes, I did read that. Forgot I read that. She may have very well been raped, it's the other girl, the one the article is really about, is the one that seems fishy since at all started through her.

I am not sure how I feel about this case. These girls may have very well been raped, but it sounds more like two barely teen girls getting drunk for the first time, hanging out with the older ''cool'' kids for the first time, wanting to impress these guys, made a poor decision to get drunk that led to them having sex with two boys, then regretting it immediately. Why would that girl go to bed and just leave her friend outside? That really doesn't make sense. My guess is if the girl outside had gone inside and went to bed, we wouldn't be discussing this. I'm guessing her mother freaked out and the girl didn't want her mother to know what really happened and cried rape. On the other hand, if these girls were really raped, than it's just another example of how ****** our justice system is.

Wow. This is a tiny bit crazy. First, if you are an 18 year old man, you should probably not be having sex with a 14 year old, no matter what. Like seriously, maybe if you are 18 and dating a 14 year old, you should not have sex with her. What if that was your kid? I don't care how much you think she wants it. Second, I am a little concerned on here about how we all seem to be acting like drunken sex happens all of the time and is always OK. I do think there is a big difference between drunken sex between 2 adults and that happening with a 14 year old. And I have a problem with the 'if your drunk, it's OK argument'. At some point, you have to take responsibility, drunk or not.

The bottom line is that it seems pretty obvious that there was enough evidence for charges and a trial. If the 18 year was so innocent, then he'd get off.

Why does it seem fishy? So we'll believe the adult in the situation and blame the kid in the situation? No one knows what happens, but before you have sex with a 14 year old you might want to think about it just a bit.

I never said it was ''OK,'' I am just saying it seems like a freshman girl who had the star senior eyeing her and wanted to impress. The kid was also 17, not 18. They were both in high school, which means they shared hallways, classes, and every school activity together along with everyone else in the school. Apparently where you came from seniors didn't date freshman. Apparently kids didn't have sex either.

Maybe, but I think the star senior bears some responsibility no matter what. At the very, very, very least he displayed incredibly poor judgement. At the very worst, he is a rapist. The star football player had also previously been arrested for drunk driving.

You are not going to think about it when you are a 17 year old kid. Put yourself in your teenage shoes. You sound like someone who never partied or had sex in high school or you have completely forgotten what it was like to be a teenager.

I agree.

I can't imagine why so many rapes go unreported with ideas like this being tossed around.

There is also the flip side to what you say where so many girls aren't really raped, and say they were because they regret the decision they made.

And this line of thinking is why the situation is what it is today.

when two girls are raped (the raper of the 13 year old got sent to juvenile court) and video taped during rape and one is left for dead in barely any clothes on a freezing night there should not be anyone questioning whether or not they were trying to impress senior boys and just now regret it.

As a father of two girls this train of thought horrifies me.

And that's equally as despicable as you saying these girls weren't raped because they're just kids being kids. You don't live in Maryville by chance do you?

It is a tough thing. But he had sex with a very, very drunk girl. He was apparently well enough to ride (or drive) in a car afterwards and leave her on a door step in the middle of winter. At some point, 17 or not, dating or not (which they weren't) he has to have some responsibilities for his actions. And they weren't dating. And we don't know what the girl wanted or did not want. She was still legally drunk 7 hours later. If she was still that drunk, I'd go ahead and assume that she was incapable of giving consent.

I think there is a huge difference between 14 and 16 though. 14 year olds are babies. I would hope that there aren't a lot of 17 year olds out having sex with 14 year olds. And I hope that my kid knows that is not even close to acceptable behavior.

Really? That's the position you're going to take? This is why people don't come forward when they're raped, because they are accused of "asking for it" or that they're just trying to ruin the guys reputation. How about this (and I'm a college guy so I know this isn't that hard to do), don't put yourself in a situation where the other party can claim you raped them. It isn't that hard, and then it will be pretty easy to show the other side is lying.

Here's the thing. I am guessing you are a man. I'm a woman and I've never come close to being raped. But I am going to guess that faking a rape, isn't exactly fun and games. I am sure some people do it. But, I would guess (and I think the research backs me up) that it is far more likely to not report a rape.

And I think the bottom line in this case is that the 14 year old was drunk enough HOURS later that she was legally drunk. Common sense says that she was too drunk at the time it happened to give consent. And if the 17 year old wanted to argue that she was able to give consent, then he can argue away in court. Small towns being what they are, he'd probably get off.

I also hate it since it implies we aren't capable of controlling ourselves and only think with our dicks.

We know nothing about this video tape. For all you know that video could show two kids having consensual sex. The kid who filmed it for sure should have some charges pressed on him regardless. There are two sides to this story, we have heard one side. I am not condoning rape, nor am I trying to say these girls weren't raped, I am just saying we know very little about the case, and let's not just throw these boys under the bus for something that could have just been poor judgement.

And no I don't live in Maryville.

If the boys really did rape these girls, like I said in the first post, this is just another example of politics, and our horrible judicial system. I knew I never should have commented in this thread.
