Niang popularity as a Cyclone

I think an argument could be made Niang is the most popular cyclone right now.
But it isn’t fair to compare him to Fred right now.

My question is what was Fred like as a 30 year old? Did he come back to Ames often for games? Did he make put on basketball camps or golf outings?
I honestly don’t know.

Of course some will put Fred down for leaving for the Bulls and now being at Nebraska.
How would fan perspective change if Niang gets into coaching and ends up at Kansas?

Well over 35 here and it’s Georges without a doubt. Fred had his chance and decided to leave ISU. And now he is “home” at knebraska!! Doesn’t sound like the resume of a GREAT Cyclone in my book!!
I am 60 years old and followed ISU when Fred was a ball boy. Georges in a land slide. Maybe I am biased because Georges stopped at our tailgate today. Fred moved on and that’s fine, and he would have been top of the list with Johnny Orr decades ago but it is Georges now.

What was Fred up to today? Tailgating at the game? Have you seen him around Ames lately? Dude couldn’t give two ***** about ISU.
Sigh...look, I like most of your posts, particularly when it comes to politics, but this is just absurd and silly.

FFS, Fred has a season that is starting in a couple of months to get ready for. I think it's perfectly okay to cut him some slack for not being at the game today.

And honestly, this is the kind of sh!t that just validates my personal opinion that the ISU fan base is the most f*cking insecure group of fans in the whole damn country, or at least the Midwest.

I'm sure I'm going to get "dumbed" and "disliked" by a few posters for writing that, but I really don't give a rip anymore at this point; it needs to be written. Whether it's people whining about Jared Stansbury leaving CycloneFanatic for what he felt was a good professional opportunity (God forbid!) or others losing their sh!t when Fred left for Nebraska in the first place ("He never loved us!! He hates us!!!") it really just makes us look f*cking pathetic and I'm just over it at this point.

I should have known when I opened up this thread that it was just going to devolve into some sort of silly debate like this, instead of just being an opportunity to show a Cyclone legend like Georges some much deserved respect and love. I've been here too long by now to expect anything different.

Georges, Monte and Ejim all gave about everything someone could to a basketball team for four years and in 5-10 years when they're done playing they should be automatic retired jerseys. By all accounts all are great people and student athletes and hard workers. Everyone loves Georges because he had the production and the lovable fun personality but the cases for the other two...

Monte was so much more statistically productive than people realize. In just 4 seasons he is STILL the all time leader in Big 12 minutes played, that is crazy to think about how we had the all time NCAA assist to turnover ratio leader and he also played more Big 12 basketball than any player ever. He's top 10 in a ton of other Big 12 stats...this is after a lot of players got an extra year than he had with the covid year. He was so dedicated and hard working, just seemed to never let us down on the court and had the ultimate team attitude. For people who like advanced stats he's still the #1 Big 12 player in offensive win shares and #3 in total points produced (Niang is actually #1 there).

Ejim stuck with us through the coaching change and was the glue that turned it around. He showed such dramatic improvement year to year. His senior season has probably only been matched by Fizer and Grayer in terms of production in one year with the Big 12 PotY backing that up. Again just seemed like the ultimate selfless leader and team first personality.

I remember Johnny Orr being pretty damn popular. (The thread said ...popularity as a Cyclone...not just Cyclone player)

Why does it have to be a competition? Niang would be the first to say that he wouldn't be here without Hoiberg.

Niang is awesome to have around during CyHok Week. He is the GOAT of Hok trash-talking!

Fred vs Niang: I think a lot has to do with the cyclone fans’ age. The 35 and younger crowd will likely say Niang is the most popular cyclone ever. The 35+ crowd may lean towards Fred.

Two legends. Niang seems to be much more relatable to today’s fan base
I'm old and I'd vote Georges. But to be fair without Fred there never would of been a Georges in Ames.

If it's a competition I think both Georges and Fred would vote Thompson.

I wonder how some of you would answer this if Fred never went to Nebraska. Without Fred you don't have Georges. But reality is Georges still really loves being here whenever he can. Hoiberg never liked the pedestal.

This is the answer (give or take). Fred coached 3 years while I was in school and Niang played 1 year when I was in school. Loved both of them but Fred made a decision to leave and Niang passed him up in my books. Fred is still an ISU legend but him put a damper on on his relationship with ISU. Niang on the other hand has sustained and thrived in his relationship with ISU. Give it time and none of the students and young fans will even know who Fred is and as others have said, I wouldn't be shocked if Niang came back to coach in some capacity.

Niang for sure. I love his trolling on Twitter.
