Agreed. It's just a little befuddling to me because Meeker has great size and could have solid potential. Plus he grew up 20 minutes from Iowa City. They bring in the other 4 in-state OL and don't extend an offer to Meeker. Smells fishy to me. That's all. I'm sure I'll get bashed for saying so, but it's just how I feel. It doesn't quite add up.

I don't think that it's fishy at all. ISU didn't offer the Paulson twins or Reynolds. Different coaches with different philosophies see things differently. Only time will tell who was right, but no one is perfect in evaluating talent...especially kids who you are projecting to put 30 lbs on.

There must have been something they didn't like about him. That's all I was saying. It's just the fact that he's camped with Iowa multiple times, and he grew up very close to Iowa City. That makes me wonder why they didn't offer. Usually a kid with his size and recognition would get one.

Iowa backed off Seantrel Henderson for good reason. They backed off Rodney Coe for good reason. It could be fundamentals, technique, or attitude. Who knows? Must have been something. He definitely has the look of a future D1 lineman. I don't know anything about Meeker so it isn't fair to speculate.

Meeker meets Mangino

While it’s true that Meeker has been around Iowa State’s program quite a bit over the past couple of seasons, he hadn’t met new offensive coordinator Mark Mangino until this past weekend at camp.

“I got a great feel from him,â€￾ Meeker said. “I already knew the other coaches but he is definitely a guy I want to play under. It will be an honor to play for him.â€￾ ... "

Maybe MM was the difference maker???

I think you are looking for something fishy when it's merely they like other prospects more.

I'd have liked to land Nelson, Render, and Scheel last year. Especially Nelson and Scheel. Saw Nelson play in person twice. Kid is a freak.

Nelson from Xavier? Only reason he was a D1 athlete was because of his frame. Talent was merely above average. Vega was by far the best player on that team except he didn't have as long of arms so it didn't equate to BCS offers

According to Rivals, yes. He's not rated on Scout which means they have him below a 2 star. 247 has him as #3 in Iowa.

He recently camped at Iowa, and didn't receive an offer. He plays at CR Prairie so he's right in Iowa's backyard. makes me wonder why Iowa never made an offer. They do already have the Paulsen twins. That might be part of it. Here's a link with a write up about Iowa's dealings with Meeker *(towards the bottom):

Iowa's Chances with Bryce Meeker: To be fair, Iowa hasn't offered Meeker, and if they did, I think we'd be looking at a different story. Meeker has been around Iowa's radar though, and he's an intriguing offensive tackle recruit at 6-foot-7, 290 pounds. He has the length a program like Iowa covets on the edges of the offensive line.
Apparently Iowa never saw what they wanted to see out of Meeker though, because he's been to countless camps and junior days, and has yet to receive an offer.

I've predicted Meeker will end up at Iowa State

Iowa State saw him at camp and pulled the trigger on an offer a few days ago, and now it looks like a underrated recruit who would have been a guaranteed Hawkeye had he received an offer, will end up in Ames.
Sure, the Hawks can still offer, but at this point since they've waited so long; I'm not sure they will.

The composite has him #3 in Iowa, which is heavily influenced by Rivals #1 rating (currently) - 247's own recruiting experts do not have him ranked among the top prospects in Iowa at all. Rivals has a reevaluation coming this summer after camps, so it'll be interesting to see if he still is #1 or if someone like a Paulsen or Newborg takes the #1 spot.

Who cares if Iowa offered him or why not? The most important points here is that he is a Cyclone. Mangino saw something he liked. Good enough for me.

what is frustrating is Nelson's parents are ISU alums...the nerdy variety from the Walden/Criner era who probably never been back to Ames in 25 years....and switched allegiances

what is lame, the Nelson kid allegedly commits to Iowa to stay close to his girlfriend. good lord.

what is mind-blowing, is Nelson turned down an offer from Stanford, in order to join the Hawkeyes. lol

Good for Iowa I guess, but why do kids turn down an opportunity of a lifetime--- like a Stanford education? $46,000/yr tuition and another $16K room & board/yr?

It's insane. Nelson wants to be in pre-med. Stanford is perfect place for that, and even ISU has several undergraduate majors that will prepare you for med school in IC and elsewhere

Word on the street was that Nelson wants to be an Orthopedic Surgeon, and that Dr. Ned Amendola (world renowned Ortho. Surgeon at U of I) gave him a personal tour of the U of I Hospital and Clinics. He also allowed him to job shadow.

Any time you get an offer from Stanford that is an incredible opportunity. I would never downplay that. In fact, if my kid had an offer from Iowa and Stanford I would probably push him or her to go to Stanford. However, the medical schools at Iowa are top notch. If he wants to become a surgeon and stay close to home while doing it then Iowa was by far his best choice. It's not like he chose Kirkwood over Stanford.

Seriously do you think before posting? What do you think he was going to say when being interviewed by the guy that runs the ISU recruiting site? Do you really think he's going to say, "well, Iowa was my dream school but they didn't offer so I went ahead and took the next best thing but I'm still open if Iowa comes knocking"?
Pretty big words to throw out if he somewhat didn't mean it.

Stolen right out of Iowa's backyard! Hawks crap their drawers again!

Please don't make us ISU fans look stupid saying dumb things like this.

Meeker did NOT have an offer from ISU, so how is it that we stole him again?

But don't be shocked if Meeker ends up at Iowa anyway though. If they strike out on all their other offers and end up having an open scholly as we get closer to Signing Day and offer it to Meeker, I think he'd jump on it.

I kinda know Meeker a little bit, and he is a great kid, but yes he is a BIG Hawkeye fan. Wears a lot of Hawkeye gear at school. I'm glad he's a Cyclone, but not holding my breath on it quite yet.

If anything, he might be too nice of a kid though. Not sure he's got enough of a mean streak in him or not? He's definitely got the size though. He's a very big kid, and not fat at all. He made Nelson from Xavier look small on the basketball court. Nelson had the height on him, but Meeker was MUCH bigger and stronger.

Hope he sticks with the Clones. We shall see.

I don't mean to hijack this thread; but, the "big deal" (offensive line-wise) is Grant Schmidt's decision (Sioux Falls, SD OT prospect). He is currently camping at Columbus, Ohio, and has stated that his top 3 are Ohio State, Minnesota, and Iowa State. Rated (by Rivals) as the #22 2015 offensive tackle prospect in the country. If he doesn't commit, while at Ohio State, I like our chances.....

Schmidt verballed to Ohio State today. http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2014/06/four-star_south_dakota_ot_gran.html

The flaw in your logic is that you seem to think that iowa is always right on their evaluations. I'm sure that there was a reason why iowa didn't offer Meeker. Just like there was a reason why ISU didn't offer the Paulsons or Newborg. There was also a reason why iowa didn't offer Jake Knott. No one is perfect. Iowa could be proven wrong in 4 years. Or both schools could be proven right if Meeker is starting for ISU and iowa has better players on the interior OL than him starting. Or, ISU could be proven wrong and he's a bust. You never know. The only thing that is certain is that no one is perfect on evaluation and different coaches see things differently.
