New PA Announcer

Somewhere there is a really good article about Pete and Jim Zabel. Jim was asking Pete about announcing for the Hawks someday, he said something to the extent of "Nope ISU took the chance on me, and that's who I'm staying with"

This should really rile up the old folks:
John does just as good of a job as anything I've heard Pete call. His banner will be right next to Pete's when the time comes in Hilton.
But…but…isn’t John a Drake grad?! How could he possibly be loyal to ISU?

:jimlad:

Nope I'm with you, John's service to ISU has been outstanding and he had some huge shoes to fill in a sudden and totally unexpected time.

Pete will be my favorite just because of the many hours of FB and MBB I listened to while working, you could just turn the radio on and from the sound of his voice tell if the Clones were up or not. I'll admit that I'm the rare bird who really likes listening to our announcers call the game. If I can get them on the radio or internet, I don't need to see the game.

But back on topic congrats to the new PA person, I hope he does great.

Gary did both football and men's basketball for many years before switching to just hoops in ~2001.
You are old enough to recall the guy before Gary. They eventually retired him to doing PA in the press tower only years later. While I did not dislike his work, it was as though he was reading the lunch menu to us at times with his in-game announcements. Is he still living?

Win died in 2012. He started on PA at Clyde Williams around 1960 or so, and kept the gig when the new stadium opened. Gary replaced him in 1987, I believe it was.

It was a bad comparison, but I guess the guy is smart enough to know that there are probably a group of Cyclone fans that already don't like him because he went to a school that an even bigger group of Cyclone fans hate.

I must have missed the part where he compared himself to Pete Taylor. Mentioning that Pete also graduated from Iowa is not a comparison. It's a plea for the ******* subset of our fan base to give him a chance before writing him off and telling him to **** himself.
