New foreign commit - Giorgos Tsalmpouris

I'm thinking Fred could make some serious hay with a 7' 1" version of Julo.

No but I seen Fred basically saying he was committed. Something along the lines of "I can't talk about a recent commit because he hasn't signed yet, but I can talk about a former foreign player Julius Michilk(sp?)"

Hearing it from Fred is good enough for me. I think it is on video on the Rag somewhere.

I did not understand the reference to Michilick. The issue I have is that the kid from the ukraine has a last name that sounds very similar to Michilicks name. The kid from greece has a very different name. So I did not understand if he was just using Julo as an example of a foreign kid (greece), or if he was trying to use it because it sounds very similar to the kid in the ukraine.

He was making a joke. I think Fred and Julo were roommates at one point. They're friends.

It sounded like he was comparing the guy's game to how Julo used to be all over the court, not a typical post up big guy.

I don't think it was much more than they are both foreign players, so it was a humorous way to give anyone who follows recruiting a wink wink.

Julo was not a post at 6'10. He was a spot up shooter and kind of a point forward. Even though it was scary as hell when he was bringing the ball up the court. Fred was basically saying the kids game is similar to that of Julo. Not there names or anything about there personality.

6'11 foreigner who can drain threes has good footwork and an old man's game around the basket. The kid reminds me a lot of Michalik. So does Fred is how I took it. Georges does except he is way more of a post presence as I presume this kid does. He seems like a bigger version of Michelik to me. I could see him play the 4 spot with Georges a 5 at times.

If this kid can defend a little on the block and defensive board-look out. That's what Fred's getting at.

This is exactly what it was. No comparison of the two as players at all.

considering van Coleman and other media folks have made the comparison to playing style I would say you are wrong. He said "think Julius michalik" meaning that is how he plays.

Maybe, but I think I saw more blocks and dunks from this kid in 2 min of highlights (I realize) than I recall from Michalik's four year ISU career. He shot layups and jumpshots from what I recall.

Besides, I blame the common laziness of only comparing white guys to white guys, black guys to black guys, and Europeans to Europeans.

I stand by my interpretation; I thought it was pretty obvious.

If van Coleman says it... It's the TRUTH

I stand by mine I thought it was obvious too. Van may not be the most respected analyst this site but i agreed with his take on this kid. He said "think michalik with a better inside game". More importantly Fred said "I have been getting a lot of questions about a guy I cant talk about that you are going to see next year. But I can talk about Julius Michalik a guy I think will remind you of him a little bit when you see him play".

Really it is pretty obvious he was making a player comparison, but whatever, interpret how you want.

He has the baby hook, is quick enough to guard a forward on the perimeter like Julius, can hit an awkward release 3pter. If you think that it is lazy fine but it was a comparison on play none the less made by our coach and others.

Clay custer is similar to Michalik? That's what I'm assuming fred is talking about :spinny:

I'm not going to wade too much into the whole Julius comparison argument, because frankly IDK and it's not worth arguing about. However, on the subject of Van Coleman, I would remind you he was insisting Peter Jok was one of the top recruits in the nation even into the end of his senior year...long after the hype had worn off from every other recruing service.

That's probably the first and last time we'll ever have a Julo comparison. That dude was one of a kind, with both the good and the bad. (more good than bad obviously)

I did too until he compared Custer to monte morris. So much for comparing white players to only white players theory.

Always comparing white players to other white players is the lazy, uninformed analysts' way. Hoiberg knows basketball too well to rely on such lazy comparisons.

Colemans listing of Jok as a top rated recruit was from an earlier non-updated list. He even said that. Coleman does some dumb stuff but he's not that dumb. He took a lot of crap but it was because people were too lazy to look into it. I saw the list and I made fun of the list but I looked into it.
