Need Help from Computer guys

What school is she going to? I pretty sure both the ISU and Iowa bookstores run student discounts on Apple products. Worth a look.

Discounts for students are available from Apple and through ISU Bookstore. You might also look on Apple website for certified refurbished. These are like new and come with Apple warranty at greatly reduced price.

If she needed a car to drive to school, would you buy her a Porsche?

If not, seems to me a Chromebook would be all she needs for most classwork and/or online labs and texts.

What's more, androids skirt that ugly Windoze crapola that happens with updates and versions. If she's living off-campus or at home, put your bucks towards the fastest internet you can afford. That would be more useful.

I know of at least one college in Iowa that used to power down their servers overnight to deter foreign hackers, never realizing that lots-o-kids these days do (or start) their coursework at 2 a.m.

Do not listen to this guy.

My daughter starts college in August. She told me she needs to get a Mac Book Pro or Mac Book Air. I have never bought a computer in my life. Which one should I get? Is there a used Market that I can get one at a lower price or should I just buy a brand new one for her. Any help would be Welcome.

Education prices at the bookstore are as good as I have seen on sale other places. I would get an air over a pro. Air is the same chip, same ram, a bit less resolution screen, but also fanless for a few hundred less. And an air is crazy portable, she will be happiest with an air. I am a nerd, and I use Macs all day at work. PM me if you have any questions. I am getting my computer science son an air before he starts this fall.

Ohh, and buy applecare, then she can get anything that goes wrong handled on campus at the bookstore.

You can save hundreds to $1000+ if you don’t go Apple. Does she really need it or is it a status thing?

Mac’s are fine btw it’s just the cost benefit gets real hairy with them if the person using it doesn’t actually need it

Think the kids airs cost a little under a grand. Spent an extra 75 or so and got them cases immediately. One of my kids damaged the case but not the laptop. Got a new case and we are still going well.

They cram so much stuff into the backpacks that that and when they drop/toss their backpacks, that creates the highest rate of damage than just plain dripping them and such.

I think apple products are very high end and can actually take a beating more than others. But for a college kid? Ehhh

I would say yes, but I am currently using a macbook from 2011 to type this. Take care of them and they will last 10+ years.

In my line of work I develop tech for customers that is much older than that but I couldn't imagine using something that old. You did get one at the right time as that is around the time SSD came out for macbook and assuming the you have one? I'm frugal but phone/pc/laptop/tablet at 4 years old is about my max. I guess I'm a tech guy and software engineer though so it's all perspective.

If you don't want to pay out the nose for substandard performance go with a nice Lenovo.
I like Lenovo but prefer Dell. Don't like HP, for PC or Printer, just had too many unexplained problems. I've tried Acer and others but give me Dell and my employer only buys Dell.

Apple seems to have a planned obsolescence deal going with their operating systems, so I would go new. Used aren't that cheap anyway, unless you buy it privately which is a crapshoot. Not sure why she would need the pro, but I suppose it depends on what she'll use it for.
? Their most recent operating system supports macs from 2015. That’s a long run for an OS.

Substandard? The M1s have been phenomenal. You can hate apple, that’s cool, but let’s not be ridiculous on their build quality and performance.
