NCAA revenge

Is it me or am I just being cynical? do you think the ncaa is giving the big fu to the college playoffs by setting the opening of the portal right before the playoffs?
The portal window is based on the academic calendar. These are still students, and if they want to transfer, they need to do it between semesters.

My understanding is that they didn't give enough thought to the timing of it, and I'm sure that they will adjust it.
How do they adjust it though? You can't do it after the playoffs because at that point classes have started. You could maybe shift the start date of the season or reduce the number of buy weeks, but the TV contracts may not allow it.

To answer OP's question, no I don't think this has anything to do with revenge and is just an issue of the courts striking down a lot of the NCAA's rules and congress not stepping in to give them legislative help (e.g. an anti-trust exemption)

When does school start? I would think January 1 might be a good portal opening date

I just looked at a few and it looks like between January 8 and January 21. But you also need them to figure out where they are going to transfer to, transfer, and sign up for classes, so they need at least a few weeks to do that.

Plus, I'm not sure starting it January 1 is that much better because that puts you right in the middle of the playoffs.

It is ironic. Teams and networks are set up to make as much money as possible and players are bailing out of the system so that they can make as much money as possible.

Doubtful, no one that is seriously contributing to their playoff teams is entering the portal. It might happen once in awhile but shouldn’t be a concern for serious playoff teams

Too late as visits also have occur before signing.

You don’t think Jeanty has received any offers from power 4 schools offering him a big paycheck to transfer?

Or those backup QB’s that aren’t getting the playing time they wanted? It might not be a big deal coming into the game, but they’re always just a play away from being critical.

No reason that the session to sign these kids does not begin until Jan 1st. That would give most of the schools at least 3 weeks to sign a player. All three state schools do not start the 2nd semester until Jan. 21st, and students can start later than that date. Extend the date for players that are still playing in the playoff or bowl games. So if your game is the 3rd of January, then you have until the 24th to move to a new school.
Moving it back would get most teams through bowl season, and give them plenty of time to pick up new players in the portal.

The dichotomy between “these guys should be paid as university employees” and “they’re still students, we must abide by the academic calendar” couldn’t be more obvious

Or “should be exclusively employees” vs. “should also be students” since you can have people that are both students and employees of a university.

Although I’m not sure they would ever make them exclusively employees since that might kill the golden goose

That still wouldn’t stop players from leaving teams. If you’re planning on entering the transfer portal, are you playing in the bowl game and risking injury, or are you telling your coach and start the process as soon as possible? Just because the portal isn’t open, doesn’t mean players aren’t actively exploring options. It just means it’s under the table until the date. Give kids as much time as possible with contact with coaches to make the right decision.

This. You can move the official portal open date all you want, but so long as the season keeps the same schedule, with the the regular season ending, and then a sizable gap until bowl games/playoffs, it's going to be a natural time for players to announce their intentions and decide whether or not to play in post season games, especially combined with the end of the semester.

The NCAA could move the season up by a month, so that bowl games and the first round of playoff started in late November. Not likely to happen, but that would probably cut down on players transferring with games still to go. Won't eliminate it, to be sure, but it puts that natural transfer time after the end of play for most teams.

You are talking about two different things though, you can never stop kids from leaving a program, if they feel they are not getting the playing time or are buried in the depth chart, kids are going to leave, nothing can stop that. But you can stop them signing with another school, and that is what the coaches are complaining about, that teams like ISU is trying to prepare for a bowl game while at the same time they are forced to recruit kids that are in the portal for next season.

Set a date when the portal opens and closes, that forces players to either not leave the team or if they do, they are not in the national databank of kids in the portal. Leaving earlier in the season allows a player to get his name out there and gives him a chance to get a better offer or a better school. By not allowing players to throw their name in, evens it out for all schools.

Heck if I am Okie State, I would have my entire staff working on the portal, where schools in bowl games cannot do that and prepare for the bowl game.

I have no doubt a change is coming due solely to the fact that this is only affecting the big name teams.

That's gonna change... The portal is going to get extended and you will see kids sitting the spring semester out.
