Memphis is so desperate.

Title should be Memphis is Realistic.

The SMU deal getting into the ACC totally changed the calculus for how you get promoted.

Good place to start if they can be considered. Make it $300 million and maybe theres a deal lol

BYU is a strong addition if you can stomach the Mormon weirdness. We already do with the Baptist weirdness with Baylor, so why not go with it.

Cincinnati had a strong case, too. UCF and UH we’re definitely just “get some numbers” adds.
I think you had to have Houston and UCF to have the right number to make yourself look viable. Bowlsby made the best of a bad situation.

I'd counter with $500, and UConn. Either pony up $250, or it will be deducted from their conference payout, with legal interest. If we knew 100 percent the ACC will collapse, and we get Pitt, Louisville, VT and NC State, id say no.

although Memphis and UConn both add value.

12m per team, just not enough, nothing against Memphis…just need a huge amount of money to move the needle now

Memphis would have made a lot more sense than UCF. Might make sense for the Big 12 to add Memphis if they could poach Louisville from the ACC to go with them.
Memphis was probably coeval with UCF when the add happened. But I think UCF got picked because they have a lot more potential / higher ceiling than Memphis.

UCF is in good recruiting ground, big student population, etc. They aren't going to become Florida or FSU, but they could become a perennial winning program. Sorta "Tier 2" and up there with KSU, ISU, Tech, etc.

I just don't see Memphis being able to do same. Memphis is what they is.

As far as this deal? IDK. If you add them and UConn and the $$ make sense, I don't have a strong opinion. You always have enough room in future for ACC castoffs if that blows up. Take 6 and go to 24. Yeah, Pitt, LV, and Duke are better adds, but you still have room for them when you are going to basically be a league with divisions, and not a conference. Hell take 12 and go to 30. You can have three 10 team divisions, east/central/west, and do your own playoffs entirely. Bball tournament too...

FEDEX's BIG12
the fedex portion of this discussion can't be understated. thats a huge corporate sponsor that wants memphis to have a home and would be eager to help.

i get that memphis doesnt have the appeal of ASU and Utah, but they would be extremely grateful to be here. plus this would be the big 12 gaining more footing in SEC country.

there is a lot of upside here.

at a time when schools need an infusion of cash, that is some valuable capital.
Barely pays for half a year of player salaries. Just not enough to take on another team when it prob hurts your tv contract in 3 years.

Here’s my thing. Why not take the $150 million and just go to Clemson, Florida state, and Miami and give them all $50 mill to leave the ACC. Then you bring in Memphis, FSU, Miami and Clemson. Effectively killing the ACC and solidifying the big 12 as the 3rd power conference.

I understand it’s not that easy, and there’s no way it happens. But man, that would be worthy of renaming the Conference the Yormark 22

So, each current Big 12 school would get about $10 - 12 million? That's pretty meaningless. TTU spends more than that just to get a football team. The money is almost irrelevant; it's really just a matter of is this a program that adds to the conference in a positive way? To be honest, Memphis could probably be competitive in at least football and MBB. Not sure about anything else.
Nothing else matters
