MBB Struggles

We basically waste a career day from Milan. Toure, Buchanan, Heise, and even Lipsey gave us nothing today. Turnovers, rebounding, and poor free throw shooting were big issues and defense intensity was really lacking. I may be wrong but I think we only got 3 points from the 5 spot and JJ got dominated by more athletic guys. Really disappointing.

Not a waste of the career day for Milan. He opened all of our eyes, including his own, to the next level he can go to. And now imagine if he starts hunting his shot like that from the first tip! :p

Love TJs gladiator approach but at some point basketball is more than just effort. You’ve got to be able to handle the X’s and O’s and that’s where this staff really struggles.

I hope one of these years TJ brings in someone who can identify and exploit mismatches. Our offensive spacing is atrocious and we don’t run plays for our best players. JJ and MM are two of the most talented players we’ve ever had on offense and it’s a real headscratcher why we can’t scheme up more quality looks for them.

They're both slow and neither have much of a vertical. They do good things, but good defenses or athletic defenders can take them away or force them into a lot of turnovers.

Nonsense. Look at Nebraska's flow on offense. The problem is that we don't really run any offensive sets. We typically send our post - usually our worst ball handler and passer - to the top of the key and run a guy off that screen. This usually leads to a turnover because everyone sees it coming.

With Nebraska being in this thread...........they are not loaded with those blessed with super athletic ability. But when you watch them, they don't keep trying to force a square peg in a round hole. Don't do more than they should. Players and their coaches need to know their limitations. It's funny with Bob Jones TJ said just that. And that's what made him a great team player........he knew his limitations. Something right now if Jefferson doesn't know, he needs to be told or reminded. You aren't Magic Johnson. Stop making things easy for the opponent.

It's all about letting go of the possibility of winning the Big 12 or being a number one overall seed and lowering expectations.

If they can fix things and play with some fire, then they'll have a chance to make some noise in the postseason. Otherwise if they're still playing like this in early February it's all over. The Big 12 is certainly no cakewalk with the top half of the teams.

Agree --Said this in another thread, but Jefferson has to recognize when its not working and he is self imploding. OR the staff needs to do it for him and take him out of the game.

Recognize limitations real time game to game.

Not attacking you but the coaches should know by now that Milan needs touches early... It reflects poorly on coach Schmidt (MBB OC) if he can't draw up ways for Milan to get a couple looks early.

Although I am not a coach paid hundreds of thousands to draw up whatever offense they are currently running.. It seems that Toure and Tamin getting down hill is the #1 catylst for creating opportunities for others, so maybe that should be the gameplan over watching Jeffernson try and backdown someone from the 3 point line, only to have a live ball turnover that leads to a run out or transition three on the other end..

I have no issue with fan "expectations," I won't tell anyone how they should think - but I think about it this way:

If you think we should beat good teams at home, well, we do that all the time.

If you think we should win the big12 tournament, well, we've done that 6 times

If you think we should win the b12 regular season, we've done that twice.

If you think we should make the elite 8 - we've done that once.

If you think we should be a #1 seed in the tourney - we've done that zero times.

If you think we should make the final four - we've done that zero times.

We have a great coach and great players/kids - so I'm optimistic we can fix this 2-game slump.

But all the big accomplishments in front of us have basically never happened in our history - so I try to remind myself its hard to "expect" to do what we've never done before.

Technically we went to a final four in 1944.

Ironically, the default offense of Otz’s first few teams was “simple” motion—others who know more than me may know a technical term for it—literally just moving the ball side to side along the perimeter a few times before trying to drive, shoot, or pass inside. Big 12 opponents attacked this by pressuring the heck out of the ball and the guys on the perimeter, and because those teams didn’t have dominant bigs or super-skilled ball handlers, it became really difficult to get the ball inside, even to take long 2s.

For probably multiple reasons, way too many of this team’s offensive possessions have been stagnant. This allows defenses to almost do the opposite of what they did to less-skilled Otz teams—keep two or three guys next to the hoop at all times, and while Iowa State can usually get the ball to the wings or inside the paint, it’s almost impossible to get to the rim, and it makes for really difficult, contested shots.

Unless you’re Darryn Peterson, ball movement is often what creates open driving lanes, open passing lanes, and leads to someone being open who has good position on a single defender. That’s part of why Lipsey and Toure look so aimless on a lot of drives—the shot clock is running down, there’ve only been two or three passes, and they’re trying to blow by their guy who’s in a great guarding position because he’s hardly had to rotate. Jefferson can go iso, but as @cyfan92 and countless others have pointed out, the team can’t just casually pass it once or twice before Jefferson takes virtually the whole shot clock trying to back a guy down, when there’s going to be help even if he manages to get close to the basket. The coaches have to figure out how to stress defenses before they work the ball to Jefferson on the wings. Then his defender may actually be off balance or out of position, and he’ll have something to attack

The entire team needs to finish at the rim. Buchanan is usually doing that when he goes for the put back but on one drive I saw today he faded away from the rim and hoped for a prayer. Take it to the rim and get the foul or make the other team pay for trying to stop you.
If you can score, do it any way you can. With the way fouls are not being called forcing it to the rim gets you nothing alot of the time.

If I were to guess, I'd say Heise just told him this morning or yesterday and that's why they said their practice was a great one. TJ isn't telling him that, in fact, he calls Jefferson the best big PG in the nation right to his face. It takes the smartest guy on the team that's also a captain that finally stepped up and told him he ain't Magic Johnson. He's just Joshua MF Jefferson.
