Hell, just look at the cops in ames around veishea time. Aside from the first year back where they seemed like they mightve learned their lesson, they are openly confrontational. They flat out caused the 04 riots and damn near started another one a couple years ago with their poor actions.

The weekend after the 2004 Veisha riot, I was walking to my house from the bar. I was pulled over walking because I stumbled and was given a public intoxication citation. I was 2 blocks from my house when the cop stopped me. I thought I was being responsible by walking home.

I don't see the problem with the cops here. If you drank yourself to the point you can't walk without stumbling and you are in public, you run the risk of public intoxication.

Ames has an under-staffed police department at both the city and university level considering it is a college town (obviously) and is classified as a metropolitan city (over 50,000 people). The Veisha riots set a precident in Ames of isolating drunk people or groups from Welch/Lincoln Way/Chamberlain in order to keep incidents like that from happenning again. If you are drunk or disorderly, there really is no leeway for officers that are in these places.

There are public intox rules in place for a reason. There is no way for the officer to know where he was headed (home or otherwise). Further, if you can't keep your own balance, you are a danger to yourself and others. He could have stumbled in front of a car or down some steps...there are any number of things that could happen to you or others if you drink yourself to that level.

Now of course virtually every college kid does this (some more than others), but you have to understand the consequences if you do and not just think the cops are out to screw you.

The problem is, it was the cops that instigated the riot in 04. Closing down bars early, being liberal with their use of mace, etc. Did some students go too far after that? Yeah, but without extremely poor management of the situation, it never would have happened.

In 06, they took a new approach. More of a friendly, 'we just want to make sure everyone is safe' approach, with plenty of outreach to students, treating them as adults not as criminals (coming to parties saying 'hey, just want to make sure you've got the party under control) and it was the best veishea year of the last decade.

There really arent that many more people on welch than there are for the iowa game weekend in the fall. Yet instead of treating it like a normal weekend, ames cops show up looking for a fight on veishea weekend, and it becomes a self-fulfilling kind of thing.

I never trust police accounts. I've lived a straight laced law abiding life and been assaulted by police twice as a young adult. In one case a cop choked me in a Ames bar simply because I looked young even though I was 22, the other time it was mistaken identity and my friends and I were treated pretty brutally because we matched a description of some criminals. The verbal abuse irrationally continued after they realized they had the wrong guys, the physical force did stop when they realized we were just normal kids and not killers.

I'm sure there are some really good cops out there, but my opinion of random encounters with college football players vs. random encounters with police tells me cops are much worse human beings on average.

If I'm at a bar and a cop comes behind me and starts choking me out when I don't even know he's there how does that make me an arrogant ***? My crime? Being in a bar and being 22, but not looking old. It was easy to "keep my mouth shut" because I was being choked. I did keep my mouth shut when he let me go even though I'd have been well within my rights to insult the piece of human crap that choked me.

Who knows what Lattimer's thing was, but you're living in a cave if you don't think cops start stupid crap all the time and quite a few of them have some permanent testosterone rage.

Most of the uniforms we hold sacred can be quite worthless on a regular basis, it's a shame because it devalues all the true heroes.

Sounds to me like he has witnesses. He was in a public place getting "choked" by a cop simply for looking like he was under 21 (even though he was 22!). Take action I say....make the evil police pay!

I hate this attitude. Grow up.

And I hate the "law enforcement can do no wrong" attitude. Pull your head out of the sand. Anyone can become a cop. Sure, there are plenty of good cops (the majority probably are) but there are an awful lot of *** holes who want the power of the badge, and love abusing it.

If you don't think that's the reality of the situation, you're fooling yourself.
