KU HC David Beaty has been fired

But this has little if anything to do with football. Miles isn't going to play second fiddle to Self and he (like all "big time" coaches) will demand plans for physical upgrades whatever those are; stadium, practice facilities, training facilities, etc. But at KU it's going to have to be very big and very expensive. KU will need all that money. And have to hope Miles can then also win. Like I said before, I'll take Matt Campbell.

We are in agreement, I was responding to where the funds would come from for his paycheck. I don't see any issue there out of the budget. I had a previous post where I said that the AD would have to be certain that Miles could pull renovation donations before hiring. I also mentioned that I would go midmajor for a HC, I think that would be a better level to start the build. They are in a complete mess and unless they have a Boone Pickens to step forward and drop 100-200MM to start it rolling, they will need a step by step guy.

He’s a significant upgrade over Weis. His name and resume alone will jump start the donors and fan base.

If David Booth is willing to be anything like Boone, then Miles could make KU a lot better, like he did at Ok St.

But he'll still have to coach. I never got the hype around the guy, it's not crazy to think he underachieved every year at LSU. He had the most talented team in the country nearly every season. He's also a terrible fit for the big 12, remember his LSU offenses?

Just saw that Les is 65 years old. No doubt the man has an impressive resume. But, there's a big difference in what you can/want to do as you transition from 45-55-65 years old. I am right in the middle of that journey myself. There is a reason you are seeing so many college and pro teams target guys in their high 30s low 40s. Can't believe Kansas is going to do this. They're looking at another 5 years of spinning their wheels.

Oh, yes I know. Just expounding...

I keep seeing all these posts claiming KU is so far behind in the facilities race which is uneducated statements. They were recently ranked 25th in top football facilities in the country by 247 Sports. Only Texas, OSU & OU were ranked ahead of them in the Big 12. Plus the new indoor facility is under construction and will be done for next years season. Where they are behind is the stadium, way behind. Someone like Miles would be a huge jumpstart on getting the stadium renovations going. If Miles is really the guy, the key will be his assistants. Hearing rumors that KU is going to pay out top dollars for those assistants and several are already selected. With all the bad decisions KU football has made over the last decade I won't believe it until I see it.

I think Les Miles with some strategic assistants would be a good get for Kansas. I mean, it would be better than a lot of other hires would be. Who would be better that they could get???

Which is why I listed types of facilities. It wouldn't matter what kind of shape your facilities are in; Miles will want more, that's the point. If KU can afford it, which they probably can if bball ceases to syphon off the lion's share of $$$ then good for them.

BTW, wasn't a $300MM remodel of your stadium announced awhile back?

The broader point is that KU will only have a quality football program when the boosters and admin decide football can have (much more) equal footing with basketball. If football wasn't second banana to basketball I doubt they'd have gotten rid of Mangino so fast and would perhaps be in much better shape today. I presume Miles will demand more "respect" and it sounds like he already has by requiring "top dollar" for his assistants.

Yeah, I don’t get why people are poo-pooing this. In regards to Kansas football, this is probably about as big of a homerun hire they could realistically hope for. Hope he can shore up their woes and develop some young coaches to take over for him when he’s done.

I don’t think he’ll make them really good, but I think he’ll at least make them respectable and not an expected easy out anymore.

His assistants will be a much bigger deal than himself, he's in the Mack Brown, shake hands, raise money, politician part of his career. I still think he fails, he struck out time and time again with OC's and LA is as good a state in the country when it comes to recruiting. It's like people forget the guy he replaced at LSU. Or are people naive enough to think he built them in to a winner?

He's a hire if they are looking for a name but they'd be much better off with a young, offensive minded mid major coach. Defensive, 3 yards and cloud of dust type of guys don't make it in this league nowadays. His only hope would be to get the best OC money can buy and stay out of his way.

I mean, they may be alike in their failure because its Kansas, but i never understood why Kansas forked out for Weis. It wasnt like he'd had a great run in his last gig.

Les actually had some success at OSU and definitely had success at LSU.

I think it'll still be a good hire for KU though, because even if it doesnt work out it'll drive interest in the program that has to be near an all time low right now. Look at our history. Chizik sucked it up here, but he brought a lot of interest in and he was part of how Jamie was able to sell people on buying record numbers of season tickets. That didnt pay off in wins during Chizik's tenure, but it has paid off down the road. If Les is Kansas's Chizik, that's a win for them, if they can then build upon it.
I've kind of changed my mind on this. KU's breakout Orange Bowl year was 2007. Four years later, they were still drawing a respectable 40,000. Things didn't really tank attendance- wise until the last 2 or 3 years. If they can boost attendance back up over 40K, that would be an extra $1million per game just on ticket sales. They need someone with instant credibility with recruits and fans. Their fans won't support a prolonged rebuilding time. Miles likely is a good hire for their needs. If he's successful in laying something as a foundation, they can hope to attract a young mid major coach.
