Returning to thread topic, they are applying the waterproof coating to the tunnel! :)
I know I’m not the sharpest tack in the box, but as I was watching the guy work, I realized they still have to seal the other end of the tunnel.

Er, right?

Or would they skip sealing since that will be under the walkway?

Has anyone else noticed during wet games our sidelines are especially slippery? Players are always slipping on the yellow tarps they use on the sidelines and the black asphalt (i think) when running past the endzone. I am just waiting for the day one of our players gets hurt. I feel like I don't see this problem with other fields but Idk.

I've continually questioned why it is that essentially every single field has the concrete apron around the perimeter because it seems that the players slip and slide across it on every one of them. This isn't just a Jack Trice thing; it's everywhere.

TV, maintenance, and heavy(ish) vehicles on any part of a grass field in the wet is a bad combination. At least that would be my guess.

Wheeled equipment carts, golf carts/gators, sideline camera cart, delivery/service vehicles, mowers, etc.

I don't know if the black track around the field is just asphalt but I agree and one of these days, someone will unfortunately pay for it...

Also before all the fancy camera gear, espn put a camera in the back of a truck and drove up and down the field to get their camera angles.

Here's a nice picture of just that at iowa state. Picture is from am old forum.

And now the cam is zoomed in on a single small backhoe out at the street.

I’m guessing this is an FPM project, and the guy’s boss didn’t want to leave the Physical Plant to keep an eye on him.

Edit: I forgot to add a :jimlad: for the latter.

If they could extend the grass a few yards past the endzone I feel like it would help but I have no idea how that would impact things. For the NEZ a short padded wall before you get to the band stands for players to brace themselves after running through the endzone. There have been occasions where players can't stop because it's slippery and they are running fast and have to run all the ways to the bleachers or hillside, and then fall lol.
Maybe I'm making something out of nothing but I think it would be nice to do something bring the field in closer to make it more intimate. Right now the endzones are like 20 yards away from the SEZ and NEZ bleachers and hillsides. Not much can be done about that now though. I'm just rambling at this point.

I thought I read somewhere that they were considering installing field turf around the perimeter while leaving the grass field intact.

Is that from the OU 1984 first night game?

Perhaps the Ames police hijacked the camera to focus on potential parking lot drug deals.

Are you referring to this part of the tunnel?

If so, that is part of the original tunnel and was not painted before (and didn’t need to be waterproofed).

Using google street view, here is the original West end of the tunnel. None of it is painted except above the doorway.

Here is the original East end of the tunnel with the retaining walls painted.
East E.jpg
I think the new extension on this end will be painted inside to match the old retaining walls (and therefore why it needs to be waterproofed). Hope this is helpful.

I totally agree. I understand the requirement to have a paved surface on the outer edges of the playing field for equipment and TV, however, they need to make this a lower slip surface before someone gets hurt. I would imagine they could keep the existing asphalt and apply a low-slip top coat - from a cost savings standpoint. Perhaps they are planning to do something different next year when the grass field is replaced (if anyone has any inside information). This would be the time to do something different

Thank you.

Not saying I’m right, but I thought that a month or so ago—before they shifted the orientation of the camera—we all saw that end of the tunnel be extended, then capped.

As I recall, it had to be, to accommodate the new outer ramp up to the concourse. Which will go right over the part you circled.

Of course, I wasn’t paying that much attention at the time, because there was so much else going on. Feel free to correct me if I’m mistaken.

I have been coaching kids for years that when they are chasing a ball in their cleats they should never run onto pavement. Once the plastic cleats hit the pavement it is like a skating rink. I don't think a non slip surface would help much unless it was a soft surface like a lot of the better paved running tracks are now where they give under foot. But I doubt that would hold up under vehicle traffic like they need this to.
