Jack Trice Stadium Capacity

You don't need people to be in the facility to determine that number though. I'm not going to say it will change this year, but if it does it will likely be this year. It also probably won't be publicized beforehand it will just change.

That said I'm not really sure what they changed that would increase capacity. Maybe just willing to fit more junior cyclone club passes in there due to better viewing angles with the new grading.

You don’t change change an occupancy rate or capacity on a whim. You have fire plans, evacuation plans, insurance policies to revise, etc before your formal number changes. Lot of moving pieces.

Yeah which is my point. It is something that is figured in the design and construction of new areas. You don’t just suddenly say next year oh we want to increase the capacity. That number is already figured in order to build the new areas. Otherwise you aren’t getting a building permit.

Bring back Clyde Williams Field as an overflow . . . . or better yet, put a couple of 32" screens in there and have it be visiting fan and band seating. :jimlad:

On second thought, nope. I want OK seats when traveling to other stadiums so no need to be a Hawkeye about it.

I wonder if the time will come when they will readjust seat spacing in the bleachers to add spots. It is something that has happened elsewhere. You may be able to push capacity to 66000, but you are reducing the fan experience by doing so
I think that would be a mistake. The seats are already tight during big games or anytime for someone over 200 lbs.
Iowa State is one of the few places nationally that increasing the capacity in 2021 might not be a bad idea, but the trends across college football indicate that fans aren’t packing into stadiums. We don’t want to give our fans another reason to stay home and watch the game from their living room.

Agreed. The seats at JTS are tight enough as is. Shrinking the seat width would push me a big step in the direction of preferring to watch on TV.

Preparing for hate, but I wish we didn't even have hillsides..yeah it's the family section of the stadium but does Oklahoma or Alabama have "family sections"? No. And I know we're not at their level but we could increase the stadium experience and home field advantage even more if we did expand the NEZ down the road...also the Jacobson is just an eyesore anyways.

He's said that they're going to find out how many people can fit on the hills (i.e., he doesn't know yet), and that it might go above 61,500.

Nothing about changing the listed capacity.
God I hate that we have hill seating. Maybe wait a year or two to take kids if they can't handle a seat..

Those seats are a big part of funneling future students and future donors. Price entry point is favorable and allows for families with busy schedules to miss on a game or two and still feel they got a good value.

Completely separate thought, but I am certain I had read in a prior thread here that the hillside seats have never been counted as part of the 61,500 capacity

Honestly, thank you for this thread. I was telling people that we sat 65,000. I don't know where I got that. I have been saying that we are the third largest stadium (seating capacity) in the Big 12. Did I have that correct?

They weren't until after JP arrived. The "official" capacity jumped from ~45,800 to 55,000 without any new permanent seats being added. Frankly, it was a corrective step as it had gotten a little ridiculous to have game attendances upward of 50k while listing the stadium capacity as 45k-46k.

JTS is currently the third largest stadium in the Big 12, yes.

If you look at the actual numbers, it’s only by a modest amount—almost like they planned it that way when adding the SEZ. I’m sure that was sheer coincidence.

Tech (60,454) and WVU (60K) are right behind us, then there’s a drop down to OSU (56,790), KU (50,250–you know that’s “in-state bragging rights), KState (50K) Baylor (45,140) and TCU (45K). Again, you know that Baylor added that “140” when they built the stadium just to stay out of last place.

UT (100,119) and OU (86,112) are at the top of the heap, and I wouldn’t mind closing that gap a bit. Not because of any “bragging rights”, but because it reflects that many more Cyclones fans being interested in—and able to—attend games.

Not hate, but there is a lot to be said for building fandom while young and making it available at friendly price points for many. Just differing viewpoints and everyone is entitled to their own opinion and mine is different then yours.

Yep we are the 3rd biggest and no reason in the world to try to chase down #1 and 2 at this point in time. Not that long ago seating at JTS wasn't a problem.

As another poster mentioned, it's not that they can't handle a seat... It's the cheapest way to get into the stadium, period. If they'll allow kids into an actual seat for the $60 they charge for Jr Cyclone Club, I'm sure 99% of parents would sign up for that immediately.

Our first couple years getting tickets for the whole family (4) on hillside was ~$400, total. That's a lot more doable than the ~$1,500+ we're paying now for seats. Yes, as the product improves the prices will inevitably increase, but I'm all for keeping it affordable for families for as long as possible. It's not like the hillsides are keeping us from seating 10k+ more people, they're pretty small in the grand scheme of things.

Never have been that big of a fan of the hillsides but with the new redesign I think it would be cool if they brought in rollable bleachers to put at the tops. This way more people can sit and would create more of that bowled in feeling.

Guessing any future potential expansion would be the North End Zone. Right?
