ISU vs. K State Game Thoughts

I don't think ESPN loved any part of Iowa State winning.
  1. The latest ESPN FPI rankings have KSU ranked 21, they dropped from #18.
  2. KU's big win over FSU (Fresno not Florida) bumped them to #25 from #26.
  3. ISU is not ranked in the top 25. We skyrocketed from #33 to #31 after beating KSU.
  4. 13 SEC are ranked higher than ISU.
  5. Nebraska & Iowa are ranked #29 & #30 respectively.
ESPN FPI is pointless and shouldn’t ever be brought to the table in discussion about ranking.

When we only rush 3 Dlinemen against 5 Olinemen, it's unrealistic to expect them to get sacks. That is, unless we have a freak NFL 1st round draft pick like Will McDonald on the Dline, and those guys are pretty rare.

The whole purpose of defense is to prevent the other team from scoring, and every year John Heacock's defense ranks at or near the top of the conference in this statistic. Our sacks typically must come from a blitzing linebacker or secondary, and the beauty of our defense is the QB usually has no idea where our blitz is coming from.

I admit it can be aggravating to watch the other team's QB have all day to throw the ball on certain plays, but he's taking all day because he's staring at 8 pass defenders.

In short, although sacks are fun to watch, they're not a high priority in our defense. Stopping the other team from scoring is.
Unless we just heard a lot of coach speak over the summer about getting more pressure on the QB, I think getting more QB sacks and pressures is a big priority of Heacock this year. IMO that's a big reason Bryce Paup was brought in.

Getting to Avery Johnson is tougher than most because he's big/mobile and KSU usually has a decent OL. But fact is,, there will be games where WE WILL need a pass rush to disrupt a decent passer who is hitting his receivers.

And I don't think it takes bringing 5 or 6 guys, to create pressure or just keep the QB in the pocket. A good example is Johnson's 65 yard TD pass yesterday. Sure the DB was looking to jump the route. But with only 3 rushers Avery Johnson was easily able to roll out. And that is something we saw a lot last year, where offenses were able to exploit our defense with perimeter plays.

Sama averaged 3 yards per carry. He's always trailing Hanson by 1.5 to 2 yards per carry at least.

I am totally thrilled we won, it gives us a huge momentum boost for rest of non conf, and it keeps the playoff dream alive. So don't get me wrong I'm very happy.

I am just not convinced that Sama is Big 12 good. He tries to bounce every single run outside and on so many its 0 to 2 yards and he gets stuffed. He certainly doesn't break tackles. Look at the games last year where Carson Hanson got lion's share of carries and Sama got lion's share of carries - you will see a common thread that the offense moves wayyyy better through Hanson. When Hanson needs a breather I would like to see Dylan Lee or someone else. If Dylan Lee has to sit behind Sama all year he will just transfer.
This team has been blessed with great running backs recently but it’s come to a point with some people where every backup running back is the next Breece Hall. Nothing against the guy but Dylan Lee has shown absolutely nothing to the public eye to warrant this kinda talk

I agree it is obviously pointless when actual games played don't matter as the ISU win over KSU proves.

But it's obviously a tool that ESPN is positioning to be a valid ranking, just look at ESPN's website. And it's obviously being used to push the agenda to get as many SEC teams in the CFP as possible.

Clemson Take

I keep seeing people thinking we’re going to have a tough time against South Dakota.

I think it’s going to be the other way around, with some pent up frustrations, to the point that a bunch of young guys get to have fun.
See everyone thought that but the view has changed because of week 0, I am now thinking a 10-13 point win that doesnt feel super close in the 4th.

The pass defense that irritated me was on a 3rd and long our backers would drop 3-4 yards behind the first down markers. Kstate was able to throw right at the sticks, catch and their first step they were already making the first down. I prefer if the backers have their heals on the first down line and force the throw to either go over them and let the safeties handle it or make them throw short and fight for a first.

Only watched highlights but to me the LBs looked out of position laterally along with distance so I'd guess there's plenty of things to improve on.

I do wonder if there's closing speed overall but we'll see as the season goes along.

KSU also looked to run very good routes so there's credit there.

The STAFF believes in Abu, given his significant minutes.
Yeah Hanson is a Damn good back in so many ways, but we need what Sama has to breakaway-offer.
It could be me, but CH appeared to have some pretty big 2nd half holes.
I just haven't seen the same for Sama, not just yesterday, but previously, snow game aside.
I really want Abu to succeed.

Pardon me for not overcoming my Pavlovian response. When Sama comes in I've learned to expect bad things to happen.

Let's talk, end of season.
The fact that the STAFF believes in Abu, speaks a tad bit louder than us couch potatoes.

Defenses are always faced with the issue of whether to rush more defenders to pressure the QB or leave more defenders in pass coverage. With it's 3 man front, ISU has opted for the latter, but with occasional blitzes from a LB, corner, or safety to bring surprise pressure.

But each time you blitz, you leave the back end of your defense vulnerable to giving up the big play, so it's always a matter of finding the right balance for whatever your acceptable degree of risk is. I think ISU's degree of risk has leaned toward the more cautious side because we've been pretty selective about when we bring extra rushers.

I think the recent point of emphasis at ISU that you mentioned has been to try to find ways to increase QB pressure (not sacks so much) while still only rushing 3. In other words, stop allowing those plays where the QB comfortably waits several seconds or longer to find an open receiver.

Yeah, no. He was definitely down short
I haven't seen the game yet, but in the stadium they showed a still shot of him with his wrist down, pretty clearly before the goal line. So, it looked pretty cut and dried that he was short. There were a good number of KSU fans that seemed to cheer at that, without realizing that him being in was really their only remaining shot at winning. When the clock began to run down to the two minute timeout, you could sense the mental math taking place in every wildcat brain in the stadium.

Sure. Everyone exploited it so much that we led the league in passing defense. By a decent margin.

Edit: Aside from two bad reads by RS freshman safeties, if my math is right (it isn’t always), the defense gave up 171 passing yards Saturday. To a fairly decent offense, with good players.

Obviously, the staff had their math down. Glad it’s someone’s job to have that figured out. I figured that there was a little too much time left and at the very least, Rocco was going to have to run around a little before kneeling. But I was wrong.

Only watched highlights but believes the linebackers were out of position completely. Arm chair is strong with this one!
