Has anyone ever figured out why the punter lines up so close to the blockers? It always seems like he is afraid to kick and hit his blockers in the rear. Other teams seem like there is more distance so the punter can extend his leg more. Just wondering.

This would be a great question for the special teams coordinator.
Let's settle down a bit. We finally put pressure on the punter and actually returned a few punts! The special teams coach can only do so much each week.

I just don’t understand how Dunn is 29 and still in college. Do they not start kids in kindergarten until the are 10 in Australia?
I think there was a gap between secondary school (high school) and when he caught on at a school in the states. He was working in a concrete plant trying to make enough money to go to school in the states when someone suggested that he use his Australian football skills to play football at an American college so he worked with kicking consultants to improve his punts and then got a scholly at a JC.

As impressive as our coaching staff has been at identifying and developing talent, the kicking game---particularly punting---is a complete departure from their handling of all other positions on the team. AND, as we painfully witnessed in the first two games, the disparity in our talent and performance at the punter position dramatically impacted our field position throughout both games. Dunn is going to have several punts blocked as close as he is to the line of scrimmage and as slow as he gets the punts executed---or, he'll be shanking 2-3 during each game. Our only hope is that some student walkon punter who can't stand seeing that will come to a practice to show the coaches that there is a much better alternative available to them or for our offense to perform so well that we never need to punt. He is a disaster waiting to happen!!
It's unfair to compare him to the Iowa punter, who is obviously one of the best in the country. He's averaging just under 41 yards a kick, which isn't great, but not horrible.
How is Dunn still our punter? he was a disaster 2 years ago. didnt he have like a 9 yard punt vs iowa?
The punt, has always been, and will always be, one of the most critical plays of a game. Where else, with a quality punter, can you nearly guarantee 40 to 50 yards of instant field position... or, be able to pin the opponent deep so they can't execute their gameplan.
The comment about a student coming out to rescue the punting duty is beyond stupid. There are alternative legs on the team right now who can stabilize the punting.
Punting is a pretty simple thing. Dunn just makes it so complicated. He just needs to focus on a quicker release and walking a straight line. Unfortunately at his advanced age it's in his head the way he punts.
We have Cameron Schook as the backup, and Mevis can put as well. Schook punted against UNLV. Next year we have Perkins coming in on scholarship.

Sure. Dad a punter high school into college. Brother led nation in punting high school. Played under Majors. I punted flag football into college D1. It's a pretty straightforward job.
So,..... it is so easy that it requires no skill, no practice and no teaching of proper mechanics?
Golf is easy too, right?
