For anyone like me who wasn't aware of KSU's "tradition," I looked it up. Apparently Kansas State was a top 10 or top 20 program pre-1990? They had a bunch of sweet sixteen and elite eight appearances through the 80s, but their four final four appearances are before 1965.

I'm sure KSU fans make fun of Nebraska football for leaning on their tradition, but at least Nebraska was a top 5 program in the 90s and still has the fan and football support that came from it. I don't see how a possible coach - except maybe one that already has historical ties to the program - is supposed to care about the program being pretty good 30+ years ago.

If you just want to compare Iowa State and K-State since 1990...
NCAA Appearances
ISU - 15
KSU - 12
Round of 32
ISU - 11
KSU - 5
Sweet Sixteens
ISU - 4
KSU - 2
Elite Eights
ISU - 1
KSU - 2
Big 12/Big 8 Regular Season Titles
ISU - 2
KSU - 2
Big 12/Big 8 Tournament Titles
ISU - 6
KSU - 0

This isn't me saying that Iowa State has incredible basketball tradition, just saying that it's ridiculous to think that a coach in the hiring process would think that Kansas State has any meaningful tradition.
Even just ignoring the ISU to KSU comparison, having Oklahoma at 7 is laughable. Yeah their fans are terrible when it comes to basketball, but they still have a good basketball tradition.

Bruce taking a big shot at KU. Personally I don’t blame him. Sick of their cheating and wrist slaps for punishment.

Plus their last two hires have been coaches with significant previous success in Lon Kruger and Porter Moser. Clearly coaches don't care too much about taking a backseat to football as long as the program has the resources to be successful.

If anyone is curious about what surly is thinking, here's one of his recent posts on a KSU message board, where he ranks the big 12 coaching jobs

1. ku - tradition-rich
2. baylor - johnny come lately with all the tools for hoops' success today
3. texas - money matters
4. oSu - long history dating back to iba
5. k-state - it really gets jumbled here doesn't it, but tradition matters
6. wvu - mostly in the big east, hard to win here due to travel
7. oklahoma - have had some good runs, but football rules
8. isu - never accomplished much, but great following
9. txt - knight then beard showed you can win even in lubbock
10. tcu - just nothing going for them

How can UT be 3 because money rules but OU is 7th? They are both football first schools with tons of money. And I feel like OU has had more recent and historical hoops success than UT.

and honestly I think we've seen how much football can impact your other sports as well....the SEC has gotten a lot better at basketball the past couple years and I honestly feel like I can say that their football success and popularity, has led to huge recruiting advantages in all sports and with their tv money, each one of those schools can improve facilities whenever they want to...the same thing applies to OU

KState is probably third fiddle in Kansas regarding basketball, though with Wichita State not being what they were 5 years ago, it closes the gap a little bit. But still, it's hard to be in the same state as Kansas.

That's the part of the business that sucks. For whatever quirks he has and crap we've given him, I think he's a good guy.
There are a lot of coaches out there that if you look at what Weber has done over his career I think a lot of guys would take a resume like his:

497-302 overal record as a HC (.622)
15 seasons with 20 or more wins
15-13 in the NCAA Tournament, 3-2 NIT
1 NCAA Final Four and national championship game appearance
1 Elite 8
2 Sweet 16
6 regular season conference champions
1 National coach of the year (2005)
3 conference coach of the year awards

He's has sustained success at 3 D1 schools but at age 65 probably getting close to the end of his coaching career now and my guess if his heart is still in it to keep coaching he'll land at a non-P5 school next. His character has never been in question, I think he's a class act but his success at Illinois and KSU both came on the 1st half of his tenure then things started to tail off in the last 3 seasons. You can argue that he took over some good teams when Self left Illinois for Kansas and Frank Martin at KSU but he still coached those teams to success for several years too.

Seems like the kitties were running on fumes the last couple, 2-3 years. That Elite 8 team in 17-18 was stacked though, and were gonna make a run regardless of the matchups in the tournament, which happened to be pretty favorable. Seems like even when their talent tapered off in 2019-present, they were still always really gritty and competitive. That's all coaching. Not sure why he stopped getting talent to Manhattan, but he always had them ready to play.

Weber just needs to go full Canseco and name names and tell everybody where the bodies are buried.
