is it just me or does this team

On defense as well Fred wants to force opposing teams into shooting mid range shots.

If an opposing team makes an acceptable number of mid range shots (40%) then in 10 attempts they will score 8 pts. If Fred's team makes a slightly below acceptable three pt shots (30%) then in 10 attempts they will score 9 pts.

Fred is on record that the corner 3 is the highest percentage 3 and he wants MT to keep shooting it. Or maybe you were referencing the baseline floater, in which case, nevermind.
Actually Fred would also like the free throw percentage go up. 47 per cent last night.

I hope Fred is pounding this point home to Matt. He seems to really like that pump fake, one dribble floater, but doesn't seem to hit them much. I would much prefer he either just take the 3 or keep the ball moving.

I don't know what Fred is coaching Matt to do regarding his shot selection, but I think he needs that mid-range floater to keep guys from overplaying him on the 3. The one he missed last night he will almost always hit, but it just looks like MT is still adjusting to high d-1 basketball. It will come together for him in time and he'll be more relaxed and hit more shots. He's still an important contributor even when the shots aren't falling.

why do simple observations automatically get deemed as complaining or b!tching? it was a simple observation, not a complaint. its simple. a baby could figure it out.

It was a pretty solid observation for a guy that, I assume, hasn't read the kenpom stuff on this and/or didn't think our staff was believers in those numbers. Props.

I doubt they're discouraging that mid-range shot from Matt. I have no idea how Fred could incorporate small statistical differences into his coaching style because I think coaching it would be so damn hard. How can you encourage 35% corner 3s over 32% 3s without making your players play tight on offense, and giving up that minute 3% difference per shot by taking a bad 3 instead of a good 2.

It's really Melvin and Kane who are carrying the 3s, FTs, and layups/dunks philosophy. Melvin's getting noticed for sure, but I think he suffers a bit because he doesn't show mid-range game, when he very well may have it.

have zero offensive game between the paint and the 3pt line? watching us play OU, OSU and now WVU, it became clear that we almost never shoot a mid range jumper, and rarely ever actually make them when we do.

i guess it doesn't matter as long as we win. just doesn't seem like we even try the mid range game.

First off what you are claim is "simple", isn't so "simple".

Your original Statement/ Premise/ Thesis: "Is it just me or does this team have zero offensive game between the paint and the 3pt line?" Is not as simple as you think. Your claim of "Zero Offense between the Paint an 3 point line" the way you frame it assumes that only made shots count as offense. In fact moving off the ball and setting screens in that particular area of the floor to free cutters to the basket or open shots is "Offense" in my book. Furthermore, I would argue that any movement or work done by all 5 five players on the offensive end of the floor should be classified as Offense, regardless of which of the players makes the basket and where the shot was taken.

Back to your Original post. Can you now see that what you intended and what you posted are 2 different things. You meant why don't we shoot the mid range or long 2's, but the way you worded it opened up other angles (much like good Offense). Just because a majority of posters came at you with Advanced Stats and Offensive Efficiency doesn't mean that there wasn't another layer to what you claim/ thought was a "simple" question. This team may not take or make very many "long 2's" but to claim that ISU has "Zero Offense" between the paint and 3 pt line is absurd.

On the contrary, our opponents shoot a lot of mid-range shots and I'm glad we have forced them to take those. I never mind giving up a long range two.

I totally agree with you here.

Before Fred, I still understood this as a vague concept. But after he has articulated/implemented it, I have grown to totally appreciate the logic involved. Now I love seeing other teams shoot those long 2-pt shots. I love the fact that we have such a sharp, business-minded approach that appears to still be a fun style for the players. Take that combined with the (frequently but not always) crazy atmosphere at Hilton, and I think it's a fantastic combination.

Expected value on an 18 foot jump shot is way lower than either a layup or a 3 point shot. It's not a lower percentage shot than a 3 pointer but it's expected value is lower.

On that note, it has always confused me why pickup games are played with 1 and 2 pointers. The ratio should be 2:3 like in real basketball not 1:2. It'd be foolish to shoot anything other than a "3" pointer in pickup basketball.

I wonder if that's why we shoot so well inside the three point line? Common sense is a great thing to have.

Was anyone else surprised that we did almost nothing with the alley-oop against WV? I thought maybe they were saving it, but with Ejim out most of the second half, they never pulled it out.
