Other than Cooper Flagg, who is a generational talent, great teams don’t play kids straight out of HS.

If I’m a 4 star recruit or lower, I’m going to the best school outside the power 5 conferences for a year or two to show my skill with the intent to transfer to a bigger program after. I feel for guys like Nojus, who pre-NIL and transfer era would’ve been a damn homerun.
Don’t forget his freshman teammate Konn Kneuppel. Could be another one and done. His grandfather is a silver star honoree. Great family

The freshman classes TJ has recruited have been some of the highest ranked classes in school history. The Milan, Omaha class was top 5. I don’t see how you can say he has struggled to recruit good freshman. You can certainly argue that they haven’t translated into a lot of success on the court, but outside of a few select blue bloods you are not seeing a lot of freshmen have success at the Power 5 level right away
Teams are focusing on getting/staying older not younger. I understand that Iowa State's limited NIL resources means that the team will need to develop some freshman and then work to hold onto them. Your point about the select blue bloods was spot on.

I’m saying Jefferson could’ve had a Jackson response if he wasn’t sure he was staying. Instead he said he was fully committed.

Similar to Shannon Erhardt asking Ben McCollum if he was staying at Drake and his “uh, ha, uh, i don’t know, ha, I’m just processing today” is a potential response to “are you leaving or staying”

Jefferson is committed

No real surprises or big losses. I was hoping Jackson would stay just to give us some size and a second year in the program hopefully he'd be improved. I was wanting to see what Rock could do but the little he got in he didn't impress. Glad Nojus is staying (for now anyway) as he's pretty athletic. Hopefully with the guys coming in TJ can find a couple quality posts to fill out the roster.

I thought they were reporting Nojus was gone. Didn't someone say that Williams said that on his podcast?

So, is Jefferson firmly entrenched or not?

In pretty much every other game he looked lost. I think it was the Marquette game where he got his last real minutes and he had a stretch where he got torched on defense and had a really bad turnover and I think at that point TJ had just seen enough.
I don't think that's how TJ coaches. If it was, several other players on this years team would be benched too.

Not exactly sure.

Team rankings can be a little suspect. If you have 5 versus 3 players, you could be ranked higher but the 3 players are all better than the 5. Quantity can beat quality in BB fairly quickly. Omaha also was the big name that year and he didn’t pan out very well.

You can’t say that TJ has had great success finding HS players that are going to thrive at ISU. Lipsy was recruited since JH and wanted to come to ISU. Milan was a good find, but I struggle to see any other solid pick ups. One every 2 years is not a strong hit ratio.

Finally got the front page updated. Thank you mods for not changing my name to something involved with erectile dysfunction, although I probably deserve it sometimes
I would also add Jackson to the transferring out list. Thanks for your work.

I think TJ’s success at transfer recruiting has impacted the effectiveness of his high school recruits. Pretty much all of his freshman signees have been 4 stars, but most have just not been good enough to beat out the transfers he has brought in. Given the success of his teams the last 4 years I think he is doing it the right way. You will not convince me that he is “struggling” to recruit high quality high school talent. Maybe if they were willing to wait around to develop and earn playing time his “hit rate” would be higher

I will ask the question that was asked earlier. Outside of Milan and lipsy, tell me the next three best recruits he’s had at ISU. 4 years here, what have his HS recruits done at other schools?

So is it the players transferring for more playing time or the coaches running them off? I really don't understand coaches asking them to leave when we only play 8 guys and have 13 roster spots.

So we don't have JR Rock anymore but we'll bring in someone that never plays either to take his place. It just seems like not much progress will ever be made developing players using this method. We basically are just cycling through new players every year that will never see the court.
