iOS 8 review/thoughts

Hey guys, I know you're just having a conversation about the iphone operating system, not boasting about it or talking about how it's superior to Android, but I just thought I'd stop by and let you know how my Android phone is much more advanced than your iphone. I feel like a much bigger person because my phone had NFC two years ago, and just wanted to share that.
I'd also like it if you'd let me know what kind of car you drive and how large your house is, because I'd get a kick out of one-upping you in those categories, too.

I don't think that's so much the case when Friday AM it's fine, then the weekend after I update the OS it suddenly starts draining. I see a lot of this on forums. There's too many batches of batteries that they can't/won't optimize the software for battery management for all of them.

Yeah - pretty much. I replaced mine in a previous model, and my wife's current phone has been (supposedly) draining fast for a while now - so you're right (but or phones also aren't close to 2 yrs yet). But this one was pretty much a Fri to Sat with the os update that afternoon. I do think it has more to do this time with the location features, but still is draining excessively
Mine was $100. I also pay nothing to Apple in terms of itunes or anything like that. Are iPhone plans more expensive? Also, out of 2 iPhones and an iPad, none have ever slowed. That never happened with my Android tablet or any of the phones I have. They all slowed down. I don't really care either way but it's funny when whatever side tries to make their choice so much better.
I don't know that anyone is charging more for iPhone plans, but make no mistake the costs of an iPhone are passed on the cell phone customers. Whether it be the price of the plans, what is included in plans, or the policies around things like upgrading. While things like the death of unlimited data or the push to installment billing for device purchases may have happened without the iPhone, the iPhone is certainly helping push those things faster. The cost of the device subsidy for a carrier to sell an iPhone is significantly higher than Android, and they aren't eating that cost out of the kindness of their own heart.
The complaints about Android phones getting slow isn't really an apples-to-apples comparison (no pun intended). Apple has only offers one new phone at a time, and each phone is representative of a premium phone in terms of hardware for the respective generation of phones on the market. Google, however, allows Android to be installed on a wide variety of devices, from bottom-dollar cheapies to top-of-the-line phones that exceed the Apple phones in hardware quality and capability. The "slowing down" complaint against Android is only relevant for cheap phones and perhaps some middle-range phones... and even then only when the phone is loaded down applications. Try filling the hard drive on a $300 netbook computer to 95% capacity with 40 programs running in the background and tell me it doesn't slow down. It's the same concept.

That said, I don't have an iPhone, but we have iPads in the family. Little quibble and maybe I'm an idiot for not finding the workaround, but they removed the little "x" from the upper left on the internet pages. You can no longer close down your internet page to get back to the home page without clicking the little square on the right and then clicking it closed from there. Why remove such a simple tool and basically double the steps to do the same thing?

Enjoy that it rings on my other devices. That is way cool. I installed on my 5s and have no complaints at all. It broke a couple of apps, but that's to be expected. I really, really like the swipe keyboard I installed. Works like a charm, just takes some getting used to. I absolutely hate one aspect of Safari. If a page slows down or stalls it just reloads it. Drives me nuts at times. Also installed 8 on an iPad 2. Performance actually increased in many cases. Only slow down I've seen pertain to Safari. Anxious for Yosemete to arrive so I can integrate all of this throughout my ecosystem.
I honestly laugh at the Androd homeboys who brag about having NFC for so long...and yet two things are readily apparent. First, NFC functionality on the Android phone is a joke. Having to touch phones to transfer files? Really? At least Apple has set it up so I can transfer across a room to a small herd of people all at one time. And Apple actually has established the means to actually use NFC payments by partnering with major corporations.
As for cheaper? Really? iPhones have been available for free, $1, and up for the same plans as Android. A completely baseless claim.

iOS 8 is still way behind android and WP in my opinion. It's time for apple to do a ground up redesign of the OS. I still can't believe it took them until 2014 to get proper WIDGETS... really? I feel like i'm still using Mac OS 9 and it's still the 90s every time i look at my iPhone operating system (grids of icons -> how novel an idea... in the early 90s that is). Luckily i use my windows phone as my main phone or else i think i'd go insane.
