Seems every game we have posters on here that know more than the coaches seem to. "why three straight runs up the middle?", "why didn't we air it out?", "I would have....." etc.
Any takers on here want to draw up a game plan for beating K State before the game, rather than second-guessing a play call after it fails?

I'm in the camp that more often than not, a player fails rather than a play. I will admit that I don't know the game, the team, nor the opposition well enough to write the script to win this thing so I put my faith in the coaches to do their job. If we lose, I'll attribute it to a bad break or two, stupid penalties on our part or yes, getting beat by a better team, but I can't outcoach a coach.

Not that it will be followed, but anybody want to scheme this win into existence before the game? If not, I'm sure I will find out after what should have been done

If we box ourselves in to only throwing 10yds or less, and only throwing to the outside or only throwing to the middle. We’re more likely to lose.

We need to take chances with 15-20 yd throws and we need to not get zeroed in on only throwing to one part of the field.

Also hope we use the pitch to our RBs and we don’t try to slam Sama up the middle more than like 3 times the entire game.

If it's like last year, it's ask the defense to keep making plays that force Johnson to make massive mistakes/turn the ball over.
Get pressure on him without letting him break containment. That means either our DEs play with really good discipline or (and?) we have a spy on him. If we can't limit his effectiveness on the ground, it will be a long day. Much easier said than done.

Offensively the last few years I'd like to have seen us run more toss/pitch/sweep stuff. Our WR were good blockers and defensive fronts were loading up inside. That's been my biggest gripe. That action can also open some new spaces for TEs to work as the LBs react to the toss action. But this isn't specific to KSU.

It is much easier to watch the game and then tell everyone that you are much smarter than the coaches because you would not have called the plays that failed.

This one people will hate, but I don’t think you aggressively go after them on D. Some timely pressure to rattle him maybe but mostly a focus on keeping him contained and let him try to beat you with his arm. Potentially some specific run oriented pressure to get them into obvious passing situations, I expect on early downs we’ll see a lot of the MLB crashing the A gap and the ends pinching to bump things outside, especially if they go to 10 personnel. I expect we’ll see it in 11 and 12 personnel also as long as they trust our newer corners and safeties to tackle well on the edge and to contain Johnson on any runs since you lose the MLB spy that we’ll use in most passing situations. Get them into those situations and then Johnson is almost more dangerous when he gets off script and is scrambling for his life. Make him try to fit throws into windows and count on the fact that he’ll make a bad read or a poor throw often enough.

100% agree. Stop the run, make AJ beat you. Cover and spy him. Blitz sparingly.

Yeah, he may beat you, and then you tip your cap. But he's so erratic, you gotta give him a chance to **** the bed.

That's kind of been when the offense gets bogged down in the CMC era, when they limit the area of attack. Gotta throw downfield some just to keep safeties honest, even if you get incompletes. Gotta attack the edges as well as up the gut. Sometimes they forget this for whatever reason. Then the defense is all playing within 5 yards of the LoS and they're easy to stop.

For Dublin - everyone thinks that with the 2 WRs gone, ISU won't be able to pass the ball. KSU will try to stop the run anyway. They are stout up front, but have all new secondary basically. So use the pass to set up the run, especially early before they can settle in. Find the TEs, roll Rocco out a couple times, throw a deep ball here or there. It's not rocket science, but easier said than executed.

And absolutely no more than 1 called Rocco run per half. Broken play scrambles are OK though.

I think offensively, a lot of it needs to respond to the flow of the game. First game of year, weird location, KSU is known but not known. Mouser will need to really think on his feet this time.

Heacock usually doesn't crank up the defense until the 2nd half, maybe the last two series or so of the 1st half.

I'd guess part of it is to not show too much but also seeing what sorts if different things the opponent has vs. film etc.

So expect an early TD from KSU.

I'd like to start with a wheel route for Hanson as the first play. You know KState is going to be staring between the tackles on that first snap. I think our TEs will be favored against opposing LBs in nearly every match-up this year. A seam route should be called at least twice a game. Other than that, mix up the passing depths and don't be afraid of a long incompletion. Don't let their defense get comfortable.

I don't envision our defensive personality to vary from the past years, so it seems pointless to assume anything other than the bend-don't-break team we're accustomed to seeing. We'll likely mix up our spy on Johnson and try to make him read our defense. I'd be amazed to see many blitzes.
