First, I don't think Fred will leave anytime soon and I know some will probably bash me for even posting this but it's something I think about. IF the unthinkable happens and Fred leaves for the NBA this off-season, who would Pollard go after to replace him?
I think his first couple calls would be extreme long-shots but worth a phone call to Hornacek & Greg Marshall - both for obvious reasons. Getting either to come to Ames would be unlikely but still, he'd have to at least make the call.
Then I think he'd go after Tad Boyle. ISU might offer him more money than he's making now and his roots are in the Big 12 so that might entice him but I think he would probably stay at Colorado.
I think Pollard could also contact Bobby Lutz and maybe even Doc Sadler although the timing for Doc would be difficult. Either of these two would probably jump at the chance to be HC at ISU as their last gig before retirement.
Another name might be Tim Jankovich who is assoc head coach at SMU and former head coach at Illinois St. He's currently HC in waiting at SMU and is a great recruiter. He might prefer to be HC at ISU now instead of at SMU in a couple years.
The pieces are definitely in place right now at ISU and our national prominence is at an all-time high so even though nobody could ever really replace Fred, we are in a great position to make a quality hire. What are your thoughts ? (other than me being a jerk for even posting this)
