I am borrowing this post from r/CFB because I think it is relevant to Iowa State. Is music through the PA system in stadiums getting a bit excessive?

I really don't understand where you're going with this. We either blare Rick Ross/Crime Mob through the loud speakers on 3rd down, or.... the band. Which one is going to fire up the fans and players more? Pretty obvious answer because it's what we already do. It's not going to please everyone, that's fine.
Why do you need music to get you fired up on 3rd down?

If the 3rd down game situation itself isn't generating sufficient adrenaline and motivation for the players on the field, and they need loud noise to motivate them, then there are some serious problems...

Reminds me of going to Hilton and hearing the Car's song "It's Magic" prior to tip-off...25-ish years after it was a hit only because it used the words "it's magic" in it. I like that song...I got the connection but it was so dated...the players weren't getting excited by it...they weren't even close to being born when the song came out and yet ISU was still pumping it thru the PA. Sadly (or not), organs at ballparks don't fire many of the baseball fans up anymore...nor do marching bands for college football...it is just one of the many ways the times have changed.

So quick question on the playing of the Alma Mater? Are those saying it is a buzz kill are you an Iowa State Aum? Most of the folks around me are Alums and would be disappointed if it was not played. Not busting on anyone just wondering as to me that song means alot and I would be upset, as an Alum if it were not played. JMHO.
I’m an alum and it sucks.

I love the band, but its role needs to be reconsidered.

My biggest concern is late in a BB game when we are on a run and the other team calls a timeout. The crowd is going nuts and there is usually music keeping the crowd pumped . . . then the band starts and the vibe cools way down.

Last year, at K-State, in such a situation, we call a timeout while they were on a run, they played Sandstorm all through a full timeout and the crowd was as riled up at the end of the timeout as at the beginning. It was impressive.

Especially when it's that one long, drawn out song that eventually turns into the fight song. Goes from 100 to 0 as soon as the band starts playing that song. That's my only gripe about Hilton.

As far as Jack Trice/football, I thought the music volume in the last two games has been turned down, almost too much.

The band is more predictable than the PA. You would think whomever the director is, would put a bit more time into learning a few new songs just to break up the monotony.
Can anyone tell me the last song debuted by the band?

For me it does nothing…..maybe I’m the weird one though. Hearing the same rap music between each down doesn’t get me hyped at all.

This was my first game in ages. Didn't remember this in the pass and had my shazaam app on my phone ready before every play. probably 80% of the artists that app spit out probably only 1/3 of the crowd maybe know.

Did like during an longer timeout they did the theme song for Iowa's own wwe star seth rollins. I have noticed in NFL games hearing WWE stuff.

The problem I see is that TV has turned college football games into a long drawn out affair, with too much down time, where the event itself can't hold the attention of many of those attend, so artificial crap has to be introduced to secure attendance, and to give the fans the impression that attendance is worthwhile. It doesn't help that attentions spans are getting shorter. If the game was paced to finish in 2.25-2.5 hours there would likely be enough continuous game action get folk's adrenaline up.

If people can't hear the band, then why not mic the band?

very noticeable in Hilton

I don’t think the canned music adds much at all. But I’m not the demographic they are trying to get.

I’m glad the speakers got knocked down a bit. The last 3 games were quite a bit better. It was still loud but I could talk to the person next to me. So I have no real complaints.

I'm not here to say which way it should or should not be. If the AD feels pumped in music helps the atmosphere and keeps fans more engaged, so be it. I went to my first NFL game later in life, mid 20s (still over 30 years ago). I remember thinking though, "Man, this is strange without a band." It just didn't feel like football to me. I had been to a lot of football games, high school and college, so it was like a Pavlov's dog thing. Marching band playing just triggered football game day feelings.

It took me a while to get used to the NFL. I'm used to it now, so it's not as big of a deal, but I definitely prefer the atmosphere of a college game to the NFL. I still look at it this way, College games are for attending, the NFL is for watching on TV. Heck, I'm not even sure I'd go to a random NFL game if it weren't the Vikings, but I've been to quite a few college games that the Cyclones weren't involved in. I'm sure I'll go to a Northwestern game when their new stadium is done.

Many fans will never know the quaint experience of going to a college football game. It's a corporate production now, just like the NFL. I get it, but it's gross.

Imo the music pumping (and volume) at JT feels generic and forced.

The overall buzz kill though comes from all of the TV time outs.

Nothing keeps a crowd going after a pick or big punt return like waiting around for 2-3 minutes for play to resume.

I'm now 40, but my whole family brings and wears ear plugs for the whole game. We're in the NW corner, about the 15 yard line.

It's ridiculous.

That’s pretty much where I’m at and it was so bad the first few games. It’s been better the last 3.

To me all you have to do is look at crowd/sideline reaction.

How does the crowd/sideline react to the band playing?

How does the crowd/sideline react to Juicy Wiggle, Mr. Brightside, Swag Surfing?

It's no contest really. The band is nice for halftime entertainment but lets leave it to the pumped in music to fuel the in game entertainment.

The louder the better!!!

I’m not talking about those moments specifically….I am referencing the piped in music that is played between plays.

The band historically has played a variety of stand tunes, whether it be when we’re on offense or defense and now they never get to play outside a couple of “eat em up eat em up ISU” or the first down cheers….and of course the fight song after a TD, but that’s pretty much it.

I’m all for Juicy Wiggle and Mr Brightside at those really electric moments but I’m talking about the rap music in between plays.
