HyVee has gone downhill by getting away from their core business into strange areas (Market Grille, bath bombs and clothes), but you can find pretty much anything you want and I guess some people like the pickup thing (I’d never want a HS student picking my produce FWIW). From when I worked there as a kid, the customer service has declined a lot as well. Most of the stores are extremely high-traffic which doesn’t make it a pleasant experience in the parking lot or in the store.

Fareway is good for staples and obviously meat/deli. The no Sunday thing is frustrating but that’s their choice.

We go to HyVee for most things because it’s closer but I’d probably go to Fareway first if it was. It’s 6 of one and half-dozen of the other IMO.

I tried online grocery ordering a couple times last winter (funnily due to car trouble, not Covid), and Target of all places blew HyVee out of the water.

I guess I didn’t realize price was so much different. I am not the type of person that remembers what I spent on milk or eggs but maybe I should pay attention more. I guess the shopping experience is what sticks out in my mind more which would make sense since I complain when Fareway doesn’t have the one thing I want.

I’ve often left Fareway paying $10 less for similar things than HyVee. Prices for basics are usually a bit less and they’re more aggressive on sales. But then you have the one specialty ingredient that they don’t have which requires an extra trip to HyVee. That’s why for me, it’s 50/50.

I never like Fareway's produce section, IMO HyVee has better selection and quality. And their online ordering/pickup is pretty nice.

HyVee is more expensive than Fareway hands down in my view unless it's a featured sale. They're both close and I'll pick something up at Hyvee on Sunday in a pinch.

HyVee loses this for pandering parking spots and their roll to check out automation. Hero parking, expecting mother's parking, Hy-Vee Express parking. It's a good gimmick to try and build loyalty from those niche clients. I just want to grab my beer and not park half down the lot. Also I don't want to wait in those automated lines for your dam employee to come type in their Id number and then some BS birthday for my beer purchase.

Hy Vee has better produce and more products, but hit Fareway for some things Hy Vee doesn't carry, Go to the local meat processing for the basics (meat). His prices are comparable and you know where the beef came from,

Hyvee Chinese works in a pinch. Yeah the entrees are garbage but rangoons and egg rolls hit the spot. Lately I’ve been doing the sushi or spring rolls for the prepared food just to cut back on the calories. Almost everything else is a heart attack on a plate.

I usually just wear my Batman costume and park there anyway.
