Hy-Vee's weirdest business decision yet?

It made it easier for people that normally wouldn't straight up pocket things to attempt it. Hardcore thieves aren't even bothering with scamming the self-checkout. They just load up a cart, leave the store, and try to get it into a waiting car before they are confronted. My brother who works for a Hy-Vee in Omaha has stopped a couple of people trying that.
Wife saw a guy go out of our local Hy-Vee through the door by the pharmacy and liquor store. His cart was chock full of meat. She pointed out to a nearby employee that somebody was stealing a **** load of stuff and the employee just shrugged. Must have easily been $500 or more of product there.

Needless to say they have added security gates at the front of the store and that particular exit is open for limited hours now - pretty much just when the liquor store is open. That wouldn't have helped in this case because it happened on a weekday afternoon.

Also, I have to say that it drives Mrs. Velo batshit crazy when we go in there all hours of the day and they have pallets in the aisles stocking. I guess they don't stock overnight anymore because it is clearly better to block the aisles stocking on Sunday morning when people are coming in after church.

This place is turning Mrs. Velo who was a Hy-Vee groupie who worked there in high school and college into a Hy-Vee hater. Don't get her started on "A helpful smile in every aisle". She blew a gasket once early on after this store opened and we got a disinterested cashier. Walking out I said to her, "Helpful smile, my ass." She went nuclear. So funny.

“A helpful smile in every aisle” is now “an employee dragging along 4 carts chained together doing online shopping while blocking 2/3 of the stuff you want to get”.

I used to like going there late at night when it was mostly just stockers in the store.

That’s what I mean. Scan a device on the cart to connect the cart to your payment app. Then just start putting things in the cart.
Now that you mention it, I was in a price chopper a few months ago and they had carts with a little screen and credit card pad on it. They were locked up and the sign said it was starting in a few days.

I should stop back in and see how they work.

They'll be more worried about losses when the non-thieves who pay higher prices to make up for the losses resort to shopping at the likes of ALDI.

Already there. Three kids, four gallons of milk and a lot of produce each week. Aldi is about half what we were paying at Hy-Vee, and the quality of fruit is much better!

Most stores have gone away from it post covid. Target doesn't stock overnight anymore either

Aldi has incredible prices on snacks too. Crackers, chips, bars, etc. Less than half of the big brands anywhere else. I honestly don’t know why people shop anywhere else for anything but meat.

And the meat thing is only because we live in the Midwest and have access to places like Fareway. When I lived in Illinois it was Kroger and they had Aldi/Walmart quality meat. You couldn’t find a good steak.

Those darn bar pretzels they have right now are like crack. Hope they keep producing them.

Fareway>Hy-Vee
Tones>McCormick

Looks like a perfect match. McCormick spices are stupid expensive just like Hy-Vee.
Current online regular prices for a handful of McCormick @ HyVee vs Tones @ Fareway spices in Ames. Just used what was at the front of the spice shelf in the kitchen. Couldn't compare ground ginger, paprika or onion powder because there wasn't a like for like at both stores.

HyVee/McCormickFareway/Tones
Ground Cinnamon$2.99, 2.37oz$3.49, 1.76oz
Chili Powder$2.99, 2.5oz$2.99, 2.25oz
Garlic Powder$2.99, 3.12oz$4.99, 2.875

Cheaper? I'm sure if I go through all the spices and compare there will be some more expensive at HyVee, but I fail to see how HyVee is "stupid expensive".

Yeah I've never understood people who always say everything is so much cheaper one place or another. I go to Hy-Vee because it's the closest, easiest and quickest. I've never liked Fareway, stores feel like a sardine can, and dont give me "but the meat is better" BS. We buy half a cow at a time from my wife's uncle and it's better than anything store bought.

I generally thought Fareway was cheaper than Hy-Vee. The last time I was in Fareway I saw their regular price for a regular bag of Doritos and Ruffles was $7.99. Raised my eye brows a bit.

No kidding. But that has no bearing on the meat at Fareway being much better than what you can get at HyVee.
