Hurricane Ian's destruction

Yeah I'd rather over report it so people would have more time to shelter in place properly or evacuate. If we can give an entire 2 weeks to a ceremonial queen dying it seems like trying to avoid a 2nd Katrina where people had like 48 hours of notice is not bad.
Think they had more time than that, the biggest issue was NO hadn’t been hit by a bad hurricane forever and the people didn’t take it as seriously as they should have.

I guess I should clarify I don't think they knew it'd be a 4 or a 5 and people in poverty had trouble finding transport out as well. I also think a week out they were saying there was only like a 10% chance of a direct hit.

Not so sure about that.

Anything that's on incessantly is irritating (Queen anyone?) but in this case they're as close to performing a public service as they ever get.
Not really. The local guys in Florida will do a fine enough job in conjunction with NOAA to get the information out to people that need it. The national news isn't going to give granular details and more often than not will end up instigating panic.

Correct, he's in that area. I wanted to meet up during one of the tournaments we had scheduled: The Emerald Coast Classic because he's in the area. COVID impacted that out so we never did.
I was going to try to meet up with him too that year

I think if anything we have learned many people get all their information from one source for huge chunks of their day.

I was in Florida last June when a tropical storm was coming. The locals said they don't really bother with hurricanes/tropical storms unless Jim Cantore shows up. Then that's when they start to worry. They have the same sentiment that your friend has.

He must be like Bill Stowe to Des Moines. Everyone in Des Moines knew when Bill Stowe was on TV. Floods were going to be bad. RIP Bill Stowe.

I agree with this. If you live in the Tampa area and don't know about this.........Jim Cantore holding onto a palm tree is of no help now.

I have a buddy in Tampa. I am worried about him and his wife. This will probably be a major headache for all of the facilities that he runs because I am sure there will be damage all around that he will need to deal with. Luckily his largest is a full 2 miles from the water but there are others that will certainly be affected by storm surge.

I've got a friend in Tampa. He says his home is up away from where the flooding will be and that his house is as prepared as it can be for the storm. He also warned people to not get too wrapped up in the hype of the national media. While these storms are no laughing matter, the around the clock coverage they show to the rest of the nation is way over the top.
I have family down there. They are fortunate enough to not have to worry about storm surge. I understand your friends desire to downplay this, but this is going to be the biggest natural disaster we have seen in a while. Lots of people do live in the path of the storm surge and are going to lose their homes and some even their lives. It's a big deal.

He's not saying it isn't a big deal, just don't overreact to national coverage of the event. Almost no one down there is underestimating this thing.

Have a buddy that was supposed to be at Disney this week. Poor guy.
short lines

We were in clearwater last year when a storm was coming in and were able to move up our exit time to a friendlier time (that we wanted originally but was 200/head more) so airlines do help to move people in and out to avoid stuff.

I guess I don't consider the national media focusing on the worst natural disaster to hit the country in possibly decades as an overreaction. It's literally like an F2/F3 tornado thats 100s of miles wide combined with a major flood event that's hitting one of the most populated areas in the country. Seems reasonable to spend a lot of national news coverage on that, but to each their own I guess.
