if we are talking about the same play. They player who got trapped in the corner didn't call a TO, but his teammate (I think McBride) under the basket did so.He was saying that he didn't call timeout. Ref might have jumped the gun thinking he did.

Disagree. Good managers learn that you always praise your employees in public and correct them in private. Hell he could even ride certain players in practice so teammates who are doing it right know that the guy who isn't getting it done isn't skating by. But don't do it in the media.
I believe the in bounder called the time out. Not sure of that was McBride or not.if we are talking about the same play. They player who got trapped in the corner didn't call a TO, but his teammate (I think McBride) under the basket did so.
I think it’s fine that he criticized his players but do it in the locker room and not on live tv we’re you bash your players. He could have done better coachingI know his quotes are probably going to make some people upset, but I would much rather read/hear that versus the canned coach-speak. The "letting down the thousands of Mountaineer fans" may have been a bit over the top, but, as a fan, I prefer that to wondering if your coach cares about the fact that you just lost the game.
Not really sure why Huggins' presser post game is a thing...That sounds very modern, very participation trophy approach.
I have worked for GREAT managers who would chew your butt out in public if they felt that would motivate an employee or the bigger group. Good Managers (or coaches) have a feel for the best means to motivate their employees or organizations. ONE SIZE DOESN'T FIT ALL.
I have no issue with Huggins calling out his players/team in public. Probably felt that was the best way to get their attention. IMO Huggins is very much like Eustachy. His approach isn't for every player, but sometimes tough coaching gets the job done.
Not to sidetrack your full analysis, but you're merging eras -- Pittsnoggle played under Beilein (2004 team did reach Elite 8).I was never a fan of the Cincy Huggins teams, but was a big fan of the Pittsnoggle WV team that made a run to the Final Four. Huggins on the floor with his star, (Kevin Jones, iirc) whose career and future in the game just got shattered, really changed my perception of Huggins. I despise the mugging style they play, but respect the effort and intensity. I also respect that Huggins completely changed their system/strategy after the first season or 2 in the Big 12.
Playing the way they do really only works if everyone buys in and does their job, they don't have the strait up talent to bail out a lack of teamwork. If a player hasn't bought in or has their own agenda the team can't afford to play that guy. I think that's what he was saying, and also why he was saying it. If 4 guys do their job, but one guy doesn't go deep for the inbounds over the top like he was told to, twice, then the play doesn't work and in this case you lose the game.
As a coach who has had players completely disregard what was just talked about in a TO, it is very frustrating. I was actually impressed he was as restrained as he was.
I would bet accountability has been stressed in practices and in private, probably frequently, and at this point in the season if the player he's calling out doesn't do some soul searching he's not going to be there next year.
One of the BEST names ever in basketball! Not to sidetrack your full analysis, but you're merging eras -- Pittsnoggle played under Beilein (2004 team did reach Elite 8).
Thank you for pointing that out. Those are literally the only 2 times WV bball made any sort of impression on me, before they joined the conference, and I combined them. Not to sidetrack your full analysis, but you're merging eras -- Pittsnoggle played under Beilein (2004 team did reach Elite 8).

No. Huggie knows defense. Huggie is likable. Huggie is a guy I would like to sit down with for a meal and drink. Huggie is nothing like Francis.fatter version of Fran, is what you're saying?![]()
I'm sorryHuggins spoke at a coaches clinic here in Iowa back in 1994, I think? During Floyd's tenure. Been a fan ever since.
If he knows someone isn’t playing D to his expectations, why is he in the game? The one that Zay kept torching, then immediately looking at the WVU bench with a look of "you still have this dude on me??"
McBride was the one complaining that he didn't call the timeout though.if we are talking about the same play. They player who got trapped in the corner didn't call a TO, but his teammate (I think McBride) under the basket did so.
Or he was throwing his arms up in the air bc he was upset they got trapped in the corner after being explicitly told not to.McBride was the one complaining that he didn't call the timeout though.

The guy who was upset only inbounded it to that player. I was there and could hear him complaining to Huggy that he didn't call the timeout.Or he was throwing his arms up in the air bc he was upset they got trapped in the corner after being explicitly told not to.
