How to Beat Texas...

This is one of the games I predict we get absolutely dominated. I don't expect much out of the young guys the first time on the road in a Big 12 game, and I think they'll put somebody huge on Brackins like Pittman who will keep him way off the block. They have the athletic ability to stay tight on the perimeter and deny good entry passes to him.

I also predict JVB or Hamilton gets posterized by James once in this game since they try the helpside block frequently.

I like our schedule after that but I really wish we didn't have to play UT on the road for our first game. I think their intensity has increased over the last few weeks and although I missed the HB game I'm fairly happy with where the team is at now.

Texas is a well coached team. I am assuming they are going to sag down on Brackins which will also take away Garrett’s driving ability. The only way to beat them is better ball movement to get Petersen, Staiger, Boozer, Eikmeier, and Vanderbeken some wide open 3s; and the 3’s are going to have to fall in the 45%-50% range. Not going to be easy.

I'll be most surprised if we get dominated. I expect us to challenge for at least one half.

Look at the optimism from Crosscyed! I think his new year's resolution to be less critical of the bball program:smile:

5. Don't forget Connor Atchley - A big guy that drifts towards the three point line a lot, he'll be a matchup issue for whoever is assigned him (probably Staiger). Don't lose him around the three point line, be physical with him. Know where he's at, he's easy to out physical if you keep track of him. Make him play defense.

They said on the Ark-UT telecast that Atchley has 20-30 stitches in his tongue from the previous game, he didn't play in the Ark game, i have no idea if he'll play Saturday (I'm assuming he will); but the biggest stat they said was that during Atchley's years at UT, when he scores in double digits, they've never lost. Impressive.

whenever craig doesnt score in double figures iowa state normally gets dominated, when craig plays great and is consitent everyone else on the court seems to be more confident...i think we need to drain the shot clock and take smart shots, guard abrams and dont let him get any shots, shut down the post, make mason beat you...i think we need to play great defense enough to make texas shoot about 25% from the field and we need to find ways to get craig and hamilton open, and we need lucca and petey to step up and make some 3's...control the tempo and ignore the crowd...i think we can play them tough but i think were to young to win this game

It's a statistical game, my guess is that we've got a 20% chance of winning. That is, if we played them five times, i see us winning one of the games and losing four.
That said, here's my game plan for beating Texas:

1. Stop A.J. Abrams - Arkansas proved it could be done. Put a shadow on Abrams and don't let him off (Haluska? Garrett?). Whoever is assigned to Abrams has to think more about stopping Abrams than about scoring. THey have to be able to find him every time ISU shoots the ball, before there is a rebound/fast break opportunity. Help out defensively and extend the defense on Abrams on the perimeter, as they don't have another great shooting perimeter player. Make Justin Mason beat you. Playing great defense means expending a lot of energy, a good substitution pattern for whoever guards Abrams should be part of the game plan, keeping his defender from losing energy. Abrams beats teams in the second half, when defenses wear down. Make Abrams work hard at playing defense; move his man through lots of perimeter screens. Tire him down. Do whatever we can to slow Abrams. Unlike other teams, ISU has five scorers on the court at all times. Texas won't be able to defensively assign Abrams to a non-scorer.

2. Exploit the Post Offensively - Texas has two big post players: Dexter Pittman and Damion James (Connor Atchley is more of a JVB post player and will do a lot of drifting out to the perimeter). The Texas bench is thin. Playing Hamilton and Brackins to gether should create a mismatch: Brackins and Hamilton are both bigger than James. If James plays Brackins in the low post, Brackins should be able to shoot over him. If Brackins plays Pittman, he should be able to get around Pittman. If Brackins can get it going, Texas will have to start helping out on low post defense. When Texas helps out on Brackins, the other low post player (Hamilton, JVB, Thompson) has to be ready to score. Getting James or Pittman into foul trouble could really open the low post.

3. Get Back on Defense - Texas is very athletic. ISU isn't going to rebound well offensively, we know that from this year's games already. So ISU needs, instead, to stop the fast break and transition baskets by getting perimeter players back quickly to cut off the passing lanes for fast break opportunities, which takes away one of the biggest ways Texas exploits other defenses. Make Texas earn their points in half court sets. Make Pittman shoot the ball from the post. Make James settle for set shots. Stop the tranisition.

4. Don't be afraid to foul - (Except Abrams and maybe Pittman). Texas isn't a very good free throw shooting team. Playing aggressive defense, unless your name is Brackins, should be acceptable. We've got a comparatively deep bench. Use it.

6. Shooting Premium - To beat a team as good as Texas, ISU must take smart shots. There will be open shots if you use the clock carefully, so use the clock and run the offense. Use all game parts: low post, dribble drive, perimeter screens to get and take HIGH QUALITY shots. Don't fall in love with the 3-point shot, or the low post. Mix it up. Don't get beat by tendencies.

Should be easy with the style of players we have.

I thought so as well.

Not having a lockdown defender like Clark will really start showing up in the conference - where teams have a standout scorer or two.
I thought we had Rahshon on Augustin and Haluska in Abrams' jersey. Only problem was when they started double picking for Abrams' and Jiri couldn't step out on him. We held both of them in check until the final 8 minutes or so.

If I'm Texas I don't double up on Brackins. yea he's been on fire, player of the week and a ton of double doubles, but to me the threat from Brackins in Big 12 play is greater when you double him.

Especially since the last couple games it seems that Craig has been better at kicking it out to our perimeter when he draws the 2nd defender. He still has some room for improvement with that and our guys need to do better at getting where he can get it to them, but I think our bigger threat is Luca and Petey catching on from the perimeter than Brackins getting hot inside against the horns.

Yea Craig is the guy who is putting up the huge numbers for us right now and he does a great job, but the SIU edwardsville style game is more problematic for the other team than Craig going off. We had like 65% shooting in the first half and it was because the defense was clamping down on Craig. The result was us putting up 91 points and shooting like 60% that game.

I think Texas has enough talent down low to provide some at least respectable Defense on Brackins even if not shutting him down, but if you double him and we get an SIU result:

We put up 91 with Craig only scoring 4. That's the kinda numbers you need to beat Texas on the road.

You can't recover from that. One guy going off for 30 is easier to handle than 3 or 4 guys in doulbe digits.

We don't have a guy on the team who can stop, let alone guard, Abrams. I'm not even sure we could do that if we doubled him with Lee and Boozer.

I agree...that's why help schemes become so important. I think the perimeter defenders will need to do more leaving of their guys and helping, esp. through pick/rolls. In most situations you want your defender to stay with his guy, in this case i say we double-team off of the high picks/rolls, and take our chances with James/Mason/Atchley shooting set shots.
