How Great is 8?

Here is how I look at it.

1. Most people didnt have us winning the conference this year, in the end we finished about where we were predicted to finish in most peoples predictions, so performing how we were expected is fine. We love outperforming expectations but sometimes that doesnt happen.

2. I also remember years we would have killed for an 8 win season, and in the end we can still finish with 9 wins, which in our history is a very rare thing. So there is nothing to hang our heads about. 9 wins or more has happened less than 5 times in the history of the program.

3. If you really look at the big picture, we were really close to having as many as 11 wins, which is pretty phenomenal. Looking at 3 out of our 4 losses were by 1 score or less. That means 1 less injury, one ball that bounced our way, 1 catch instead of drop, 1 broken tackle, or any other simple thing went our way and those losses could very easily been wins. I remember years when our losses were by many scores not just 1. So even with all that went wrong with injuries etc. we were really close to overcoming them, which would have meant an amazing season.

We all really wanted more this season, we all hoped for more, but in the end this has turned out to be a good season, a season well above average, a season that yes could have went better but also one that could have been much worse. I personally will be just fine with average years having 8-10 wins, down years having 6-7, and great years having 11+ wins. That is something I had only dreamed of not that long ago, a time that just getting bowl eligible was considered great.

On paper an above average finish based on Campbell's track record, and clearly obliterates our historical average. We also had two good wins against two of our rivals to start the year.

But, we still had to watch some of the worst football we've seen from a Campbell team and one of the worst losses he's had against Colorado, if not the worst. This season was only the third time he'd lost four or more games in a row. If we're going to directly compare 8-4 seasons, 2018 was much more fun.

Colorado game aside, yes it was bad, this has been a heck of a recovery season considering the injuries at QB, kicking, Hansen lame for awhile, DB totally wiped out, LB crew grew immensely, receiving crew a shell of 24 season. We've got some fill in to do both O and D line next year ... but if we avoid the injury disease next year.... OH the possibility!

Another thing I think I sort of take for granted.....in the past I'd look at the missed opportunities and think that it was our only shot at winning 10 games or whatever. But I honestly think that we will could have plenty of chances.

Obviously historically 8 is great. CMC has kind of changed that though. We could have and should have been in the Big12 championship conversation. Obviously losing so many DB’s and K’s among others hurt… a lot. Similar to last year losing so many LB’s.

If Iowa state had a normal amount of injuries, we probably win a few more. But again, we had more injuries than anyone else we play.

I’m happy with 8 wins and see the season as a good one with the injury issues. I am disappointed with the overall outcome because a healthy is a playoff contender for sure.

So I have lived though so many terrible seasons (born 1966 and ISU graduate in 1988). My wife and I were chatting about how an 8-win season would have felt when we were seniors in 1987 (3-8 season for football). Yet we both feel excited and disappointed with this year's 8-4 team. Should we feel 8-4 is the floor or is 8-4 an acceptable season with a 10-2 season once every five years or so about all we can ever expect at ISU? By the way, I fully applaud this year's team on eight wins.
Dexter Green made me a Cyclone fan at the very tail end of the Earle Bruce years. I had this hazy idea as a high school senior that 8 wins should be the senior.

I was…disabused of that particular notion as a student.

I am content with eight was ns, especially considering the ludicrous number of injuries a second year in a row.

And I know that CMC still has the talent level trending upwards.

I have lived through the same Cyclone times as you. When Danny Mac took us to his first bowl I was in heaven. When CMC was hired I told my buddies that if we can just get bowl eligible 3 out of every 5 years I would be happy. If you have lived through the Crinner, Walden, and Cheese Stick years, 8-4 years are great. Anything above that is whip cream on top.
I think some of these attitudes transcend sports. It's this enabled era where everyone expects more. Thank goodness many on here are humble enough to temper expectations, congratulate the team for their tremendous effort this year despite the bad luck, and look forward to another year. I can already see the 'Nebraska' attitude in some fans. Very sad indeed. But, I'm still confident we, collectively, can still positively represent the school. Just as long as we can suppress those with less class.

I’m happy with 8 wins. Very few programs win 10 games consistently enough to make that the expectation every year. And to be honest, ISU won’t ever be one of those teams. But we have had a winning record 8 of the past 9 seasons with a 69-46 record. If we can average 7 or 8 wins per season with an occasional 9 or 10 win season thrown in, I’m thrilled. This is the best stretch of ISU football in history. I’m not about to get down because ISU only won 8 games.

If we win our bowl game that is 9 wins. We won 11 games last season.

20 wins in a 2 year period is freakin' awesome for ISU (and quite honestly the vast majority of CFB teams) no matter what anyone says.

That's not even factoring the plethora of injuries in both seasons. 9th string LB had to play last season? Walk-on DBs with injuries to the secondary this year? It sucks it'll go down for some as a "what could have been" situation, but bad luck and injuries happen.

In decades past these injuries would lead to 3-6 win seasons each. We have depth, we have great coaches, we have a great fanbase, we have great leaders, we have a great culture, a great stadium, and like some said, life is too short...

...so I choose to be very happy with where our program is at and what the future will hold. Lots of CFB programs can't say that right now.

Go Cyclones!

Being a Cyclone fan for 45 years, I'll take 8 wins with a BIG smile. And winning a Bowl game would be icing.

I was doing a lot of "whoa are we (aka Mouser's inept)" during the game today. But at some point I came to realization that winning ugly is OK There have been Cyclone team that could score 35+ points, but our D would give up 45!

Campbell’s teams are consistently competitive. Iowa State is winning 7-9 games on a regular basis now which historically was never the case. Under McCarney/Rhoads the best you could hope for was a 6-7 win season with a lot of clunkers in between. And many times Iowa State took the field, you just knew they had no chance. Now Iowa State believes they can defeat anyone. This program is succeeding in spite of the odds ever being against us. Campbell can stay as long as we continue to be competitive. Be careful what you wish for. A revolving door of misfire hires can create a bottomless “rebuild” hole that can take decades to crawl out of.

7 to 8 wins should be the floor, I have been a fan since the 70s, and those days are long gone. The sport and the conference has changed so much over the last decade that you just cannot compare where we were then to where we are now. Campbell must sit down with the staff after the season and talk about the number of injuries we have had the past couple of years, is it unavoidable, bad luck or something in our conditioning program. Same thing with the special teams errors that we keep making, is it lack of prep, do we need to hire a full time special teams coach or what. But with a team that is not going to out athlete most teams on the schedule we cannot continue to have special team miscues.

8 wins was nice, but to me at least this is one of those seasons we left another win or two out on the field, and need to fix those problems.

I said I’d be happy with 9 wins, and I lowered that expectation when we lost both Cooper and Williams in a week’s span. But in November, we still have a chance to get to 9.

I’ll look back on this season very fondly. I got the opportunity to go to Ireland which was an awesome experience. One of my favorite ISU wins I’ve seen in person.

The Iowa win was one of my favorite victories over Iowa. Fox Noon kickoff, raucous atmosphere, Konrardy 54-yarder, the 2 sacks. It was awesome.

We really only had one bad month this season. In any other sport, that wouldn’t be too bad. Overall this is one of my favorites as a Cyclone fan.
