Sorry if this is discussed in another thread. Our DSM neighborhood now has Google Fiber. Anyone else have experience with them?
We currently have Mediacom internet and overall is good/reliable with 1 modem/router. Have been paying $70/mo but last month they randomly increased it and again this month to $115!

Google is advertising a $70/mo plan with 1140 Mbps download speed and 1137 Upload speed, unlimited data, and 2 routers.
No idea what those numbers mean. We just need service for typical TV streaming and work from home, I think our upload/download usage is relatively low?

Thanks!

You could call Mediacom and tell them you're not happy about the price jack and that you're thinking about leaving. I've done this several times when they raised my rates and they always get me with a client retention rep who finds a better deal. Just an option.

Yep we have done that many times as well. But just debating if we should make the switch now. No contract with Google, so I guess not much commitment.

Our 'newer' neighborhood is behind an older neighborhood, so I think our Mediacom cables connect with the older overhead lines somewhere, right? Which are vulnerable to storms. The Google fiber I would think is more reliable?

I can't imagine fiber not being more reliable.

That's a pretty sad game to play. My dad swears by Mediacom, so I have to call for him and negotiate a better deal each and every time they put the screws to him. And screw they will. I can't help but think that there's a bunch of older people paying out the ass because they never do that.

Yeah our problem is we... mostly wife... still have Mediacom email addresses that we've had for 20+ years that we'd lose by moving. I've already transitioned my stuff to Gmail, but she's not as motivated, I can't even imagine the number of accounts she has linked to that email address that she'd have to switch over. And yes, I'm fully aware this is a pathetic excuse but it's just the truth.

In general any time you can switch to a fiber provider instead of a cable provider, you're better off doing so.

And honestly even if price\service were identical, it feels good to give mediacom the finger.

I've had Google Fiber going back about 10 years. When I first got it, it was $70 a month for 1 gig speed, which was far more bandwidth than anyone needed in 2014. Today, I still pay $70 per month for 1 gig speed, which is still far more bandwidth than I need.

I have only had one service outage in that time. I was actually out of town when it happened. The only reason I know it happened was because Google emailed me apologizing for the outage and informing me that bill had been credited for the 5 hours the service was down. Can anyone imagine Mediacom giving you a credit for an issue that you never complained about, or even knew about?

Stop feeding the cable pig. Get yourself some fiber and don't look back.
