Hilton Magic

I saw someone that looked exactly like her in Hilton a few years back. For a brief moment I thought about asking if it was her but there is no way not to come off as totally weird and creepy doing that so I guess I'll never be totally sure it was her.

The phrase "Hilton Magic" has lost its luster. When I hear the phrase "let the magic begin" before starting lineups from the PA announcer, or the students chanting "Hilton Magic" in a game vs Stonehill College, the phrase has lost all meaning. Hilton Magic hasn't always been an overused marketing ploy, it was something we knew was happening when we felt it (and caused it) and didn't have to say a word about it. We knew what it was, but it was too loud in there to even utter the words.

Hilton Magic isn't just "oooh, Hilton is loud when we're good and up 20." Its being down 20 points in the second half vs Iowa or Oklahoma in 2015, or BYU in 2024, and the crowd willing a team to victory from almost guaranteed defeat. Its being down six with 50 seconds left against Oklahoma State in 2012 and winning by three in regulation. Its Barry Stevens hitting a game winner against #3 Missouri in 1983 when the program had barely registered a pulse for decades prior.

When every marketing piece has "Hilton Magic" scribbled all over it, when the videoboard has a sign that says it, when the PA guy proclaims it every pregame as though we need it to beat bad teams... its lost its meaning. Hilton Magic is a great thing when we actually know what it is, and what it isn't.
This you, OP?

That comeback vs OU video gives me chills every time I watch it!

The '92 come back vs. Big Country and Okie State is peak for me. I sort of remember watching it, was on ESPN when ESPN was still cool and it was special to have your team on there.

The red haired one with the hearty mouthy thing gets all the attention but the shoulder shrugger has resonated more with me.
Dang, I thought you were going to tell me she is the CEO of a Fortune 500 company now or something

Is that a hearty mouth thing? I thought it had something to do with moustache rides...

Hm....should be an OT poll.

Is she making the shape of a heart around her mouth or is it something else?

And what is that something else?

Maybe the Cyclone teams today are just better. Not as much "magic" needed because the Cyclones are expected to win. Still, it is a great slogan. Makes sense to capitalize on what really seems to be an identifiable Iowa State brand.

Teams would pay a lot of money to have something like Hilton Magic for marketing purposes. No one gives a **** if they announce it at some dumb game we win by 40. It's not like the TV people are covering the pregame warmups.

Personally I feel like the magic is just as much about how fans feel at games than it is about us winning games we shouldn't. Hilton feels pretty magical to me.

I understand your point and what true Hilton magic and the unexplainable feeling you get when you experience it but people constantly talking about it can only benefit us imo. Good for exposure good for recruiting and so much more. I can’t honestly find a negative about it. We are known nationally as a top 5 venue and people link that to Hilton magic. Sure beating stone hill is nothing comparable to beating Houston and the crowds are 100 percent different and obviously the magic is different but nothing to get worked up about

It’s one of the very few things Iowa State is known for. It’d be absurd not to lean into it

It’s not that wild now that the students were moved back off the floor. Also, the old rivalries have dwindled, KU, KSU, BU, and OSU(?). Need to play conference teams more often to get rivalries going. Sit down Norm!

Agree

Hard to have the old magic upsets when you are ranked and expected to win at home.

But doesn't mean can't have great home court advantage just because Team doesn't get down twenty and is ranked

Long Live Hilton Magic

Yea, let’s go back to when the lower bowl wasn’t full. No one knew the words to the fight song, unable to beat Chicago State, the coach quitting during the middle of the season. The magic is gone.

Hilton Magic is also 13000 people willing Dave Osenbaugh to turn Banach and pinning him to beat the Hoks.
We couldn’t believe we won that night. Watched it and couldn’t believe Osenbaugh won. Nice guy, used to set next to him in a class. He became a longshoreman.
