Just a wild guess but it won't be any of these big names that people are mentioning.

Re: ***Offensive Coordinator Search Thread***

I have a question... why did Tom Herman take a position coach job at a Big 10 School (which I understand is a great football school...) when he was already an O-Coordinator at a Big-12 school?

My guess... A couple years as assistant at OSU gives better shot at a head coach job than a couple more years at ISU. Especially if the O is good and the team wins some hardware.

Herman had his name in the mix at Texas State and that went nowhere. Which moves the needle more? Urban's assistants have good luck at moving up the career ladder.

Re: ***Offensive Coordinator Search Thread***

Mangino would be towards the top of my list, as would Frost. I could get behind Kingsbury as well, even though I worry if his success is mostly due to Case. Franklin was a guy I wanted for OC when we first hired Rhoads, so I wouldn't mind that hire either. We've got a lot of good options, really. I have confidence that CPR will find somebody good.
My concern with Franklin would be what happened with him at Auburn? Obviously didn't get along with Tubs and was let go mid-year in his first year their.

I would take Mangino in a second if, and only if, it remained acceptable to make fun of him.

That is sort of what I thought initially. However, if you go back and look at the situation, it really is a bit different. Tony Franklin was hired to bring a "high octane" offense to Auburn. Franklin switched Auburn over to running the spread (without spread players - I might add), and when the offense sputtered in the first part of the season, they canned him after only six games.

We have spread players at Iowa State. They didn't at Auburn...

Re: ***Offensive Coordinator Search Thread***

I would assume CPR has someone in mind since he didn't renew Herman's contract. I'm also assuming he accepted this job at Ohio State because he wasn't being renewed here. While it is very possible for him to make more as a QB coach there than a QB coach here, I doubt he makes enough to leave his job as an OC even for a school like ISU.

And yes 21 is right, it has to be a spread OC. I'm very confident that it will be also, because we've suffered the last few years making all the personnel changes to go from prostyle to spread. And like already mentioned, we do need to be a run based spread offense.

Re: ***Offensive Coordinator Search Thread***

First of all, I think Scott Frost would be an awesome hire. Midwest ties and the Oregon Spread would be perfect at ISU.

Here are a couple other names I haven't seen yet:

Joe Moorhead - was at UConn, who I think was more pro-style, so he's probably not the answer but a possibility.

Jay Johnson - former UNI QB, played w/Messingham. Now at Louisiana-Lafayette, who won 8 games this year and put up ~32 ppg.

Possible Iowa State OC Candidates?

I would not mind the Oregon guy one bit. Or the Houston Co-OC.

Re: ***Offensive Coordinator Search Thread***

I think we want a run-first spread as opposed to a video game-type spread like Houston. Nothing wrong with that style in the south, but I don't think it would produce consistent results here.

I agree 100%. ISU is loaded with running backs and our QB's are run first guys who dont throw very well. ISU needs to be a run first type of offense next year to have better success. Not to mention the big 12's run defense sucks, so running more couldnt hurt

Dave Baldwin would be a guy that I would give a serious look. Offensive coordinator at Utah State.

Assuming CPR wants to stay with a similar offense, put me down for Dave Baldwin, Utah State OC.

I mentioned this name in another thread. He does look like someone with potential. He has experience coaching QBs as well.

I also vote for Mangino. Think of the economic benefits. Hickory Park and many other local restaurants will surely see major increases in business.
