Hawkeye Trolls

Sorry if we're talking facts Iowa is the second worst team in the B1G (thank Rutgers for joining) and still worse than ISU.

Yes if this defined the success of an athletic program then you're statement would be true. Thank god Iowa puts more emphasis on programs we are more invested in. I can't see myself tailgating a women's fencing match, although thinking about it.. It does sound kind of fun.

I can see that strategy. I like ISU's strategy under Pollard where they do everything they can to support every team they field and the student athletes on those squads. I really don't think football struggles have anything to do with putting a few additional resources into the success of the volleyball, gymnastics or golf programs.

How's that working out for you?

Pretty well. I've been happy with the football and wrestling success. Men's basketball was a big swing and miss on Lickliter, but that's rebounding too. The only other sport I really follow is baseball, but being a Cub's fan I'm used to struggling there.

I'm an Iowa fan. I'm also an ISU fan. We do exist. I cheer for ISU to win every game that isn't against Iowa. The teams are in different conferences, and outside of a couple days a year the other team really doesn't matter. I spend time here for the same reason you do - interest is ISU athletics.

As for the superbowl question... Both fan bases use this. The superbowl or championship is the ultimate goal for every team in every sport. Simple answer, both teams would voluntarily lose this game every year if it meant conference championships. It's the superbowl to fans, just so they can act superior to the other for a year.

You can't be a fan of both. As soon as you say "I cheer for ISU to win every game that isn't against Iowa" you disqualify yourself. Eventually the true squawk in you will come out. I've been around too long and heard that too many times and it ends the same way every time. You don't know what it's like to be an ISU fan and deal with the majority of a-hole squawk fans that didn't go to EIU, and only cheer for the football team because they grew up in the 80s and 90s when one team was good and the other sucked and their perception has never changed despite the competition level between the 2 programs equaling out since the late 90s.

There are a few iowa fans that post here who are reasonable and only let their inner-squawk out maybe 1% of the time. They don't just show up in threads like this to bag on ISU or run back to whatever the iowa message board du jour is to slam ISU at every chance. They contribute to the forum in general. I'll be curious to see which iowa fan you really are like.

You can't be a fan of both. The fanbases, the culture, tradition, etc are as different as night and day. It is easy to be an Iowa fan, as much of the state are Iowa fans. Not so much for ISU fans, as we've had to fight back against the majority of the state. We're hardened and battle tested. ISU fans are not born, they're made.

Grow up a Cyclone in hawk country in the 80's and you will never go black.

My hate is from middle school. Wearing my TD28 shirt and my Dedrick Willoughby Jersey, Iowa kids whould non stop make fun of me. Teachers would mock me ect. I can say in all honesty, (aside from the kids being abused part, obviously I would never want children hurt) I wish a jerry sandusky situation would go down in IC.

I've offered nothing to bag on ISU or insult anyone in anyway... Sorry you've had bad experiences with some Iowa fans, but your presumptions are wrong. There are people who are fans of both, all 3 including UNI. SMH

WTF...

My niece and her little boys are coming to town next week. I don’t spend a lot of time with little kids so to sharpen up on what to expect I have been reading the juvenile posts of the Hawkeye trolls here.

Think of the children...

Over/under on number of posts this "newbie" makes before he goes all crazy hawk fan?

I'm going to set the number at 11

No, my presumptions are not wrong. Some Iowa fans? Try 99.999999%. Since you aren't really an ISU fan, you can't really understand.

So, for example, what were your thoughts before and after the game on 9/13?

I believe you can be both. My father is a fan of all three state schools, with his primary being Iowa. He lived in Dubuque all of his life, graduated from Loras, and rooted for Iowa as they were the biggest school with watchable sports near the area. He is your typical (good) Hawk fan, has the t-shirt/sweatshirt, watches the games, might see them if they're in the area, never obnoxious, and it's just another team to him like the Cubs and Bears.

In my estimation, I think at least 50% of the Hawk fanbase acts like this...just a good fan who watches their team and wears the t-shirt/sweatshirt with no more than friendly ribbing of the other state schools or even liking the other state school when not playing Iowa.

So I think it's possible for (the good half of Iowa fans) to like multiple schools in Iowa. Historically it's also been easier for them due to Iowa's popularity.

The bad half of Iowa fans will never like the other state schools since it takes away from Iowa. They look at the other Big 10 states, where most have one P5 state school in their state, and most are bigger states. Iowa splits with another P5 school in a small state. They don't want ISU to do well or want them gone so Iowa becomes better.

I grew up in that household primarily a Hawk fan, however rooting for all state schools, especially moreso when I was in HS deciding between engineering at ISU or accounting at UNI. I chose ISU. My freshman year, I was a dual fan at that time and it was the IOWA fans which drove me away. When I came home for Thanksgiving, my mom's side was like my dad--the good Hawk fans and were respectful and interested in my first year at ISU. My dad's side had the terrible Hawk fans (the type who make up the other half of their fanbase), who spent most of that day listing every sport and degree which is better at Iowa over ISU....when most of them didn't even go there. I spent most of the time stating, "No, that's not true." I was ticked. This happened again at Christmas and even around Dubuque by people in stores harassing me for wearing ISU and not Iowa. I couldn't even get ISU games on tv or read about it in the newspaper (pre internet and big cable packages) or buy ISU clothes in stores, yet could buy University of South Carolina stuff (wtf?) of all things. So like many ISU fans, I couldn't like both schools since the Iowa fans and media drove me to hate them for "being a traitor or little brother." I also knew that every win for ISU over Iowa helps recruiting and perception over time that we're inferior in everything. It's also nice when they're quiet after the losses. I believe many ISU fans experienced something similar from (bad) Hawk fans.

As for UNI fans, they're the middle child many don't care about. They'll root for more than UNI, since Iowa and ISU's athletics are typically bigger and stronger. They'll typically follow the good Hawk and root for all three (or not care), the bad Hawk and hate ISU, or ISU and hate Iowa.

So you either love wrestling or love mediocrity. I'd guess a little bit of both
