Since then, they haven't beaten much in the way of good teams. They've lost every bowl game, they lost to OSU every year, they lose to MSU far too much. He's held on to coaches too long and he's not replacing them like he did right away. He's not seeing early that teams have learned how to get Don Brown and he either isn't forcing him to adapt or he's not moving on. They haven't recruited well on the inside or outside on defense either.

Actually, it's two of Harbaugh's past assistants: OC Greg Roman and DC Vic Fangio - who aren't on his Michigan staff - that seemed to be missed terribly. Both helped Harbaugh build up Stanford to be the bully that it was, and both were with him at San Fran.

Campbell can do both. He can stay at ISU and in five years when Michigan fires the coach they will hire now, then he can take the job. Or five more years after that when they fire that coach for not winning a natty.

While those guys would have helped, he had a decent offense when he first got to Michigan and they've had really good defenses for his entire tenure up until this year.

Matt Campbell is in a great situation here in Ames and is making 3.5 million dollars per year. If he cared about getting a pay day, he would've bolted to Tennessee or FSU, he would've interviewed for the Jets job, he would've interviewed for the Arkansas or Florida jobs. He didn't. They could've easily payed him immensely more than what Iowa State is currently. I don't think what I said was that crazy.

Yes it would, but that's been presented to him in multiple situations and yet he's declined each one. My point was that the money alone is not going to wow him. Tons of other factors come into play and it'd have to be a perfect situation in my eyes. Michigan is not that perfect situation.

Yep -- Bo was born and raised in Ohio, played for Miami, coached for Ohio State before being head coach at his alma mater. Michigan then brought him "up north" to rescue their program. It is my understand that Bo and Woody were long-term and lifelong friends, too, despite the rivalry between the schools.

I will remind us all we have a similar story in our past as a program, too --

Sometimes you need to look past petty stuff like that and pick the best man for the job.

IM sure they would. They did it with their most successful coach in History. They can always show the fans that Bo came from there. So they could easily sell it to the fan base. It's like when Dan McCarney came to Iowa State. We were a little like Ummmm we just hired a Hawkeye. Now Dan is probably the most loved Football coach ever at Iowa State.

IF Campbell does infact have Ohio State on his ultimate wish list then I don't think he takes the Michigan job because it would potentially "cloud" the path to Ohio State. Interconference coaching changes has happened in the past but it just doesnt fly now a days.

Money is a mute point. At this point he is compensated well. Remove names at this point. If a paid well coach leaves job A for job B it isnt because of money it is because THE coach AND THEIR spouse are ready for a new chapter and new adventure. You can add a few million on top of a few million and it'll catch their attention but the coach will leave only if THEM AND THEIR SPOUSE are ready for the next chapter. At that point there is nothing anyone can do.

I guess I always assumed, maybe incorrectly that the OSU-MU hatred really took off in the Bo and Woody days, so it didn't really matter at the time. But point taken to appease the fans that it worked before.

As for Campbell and MU, the one thing dorks in sports media seem to get wrong a lot is assume that because these coaches are ultra competitive and have big egos, that drives them to get better jobs. While it is true that coaches want to compete for titles, and they will do that either if the money is huge or they realize they can't compete for titles a their current school. But it is also taking a path of lesser resistance, and often going from potentially building a program to becoming a caretaker of one. If you improved the UM program dramatically from its current state you maybe get to Lloyd Carr level and still will be nothing compared to Bo. One thing about CFB that's unique is that a guy can win a National title in the right situation like Chiz or Coker and really be nothing historically, while you can build a good program from the ground up like Beamer or Snyder without a title and be a legend.

Just curious. Just picking round numbers. Let’s say $8 million a year at Michigan for the next five years

Or $3.5 million a year at ISU for the next thirty.

How’s that math work out for total pay?

Easy to say when there's not a $50mil contract sitting in front of you.

I agree that money matters less to MC than most, but it still almost always matters some. The bigger thing is the assistant pool. Michigan can blow us away on HC spending but it's even worse down the line.

I remember similar statements being made about the Mayor.

I'm cautiously optimistic but I won't hold my breath.
