In Ames tonight for daughter's dance recital dress rehearsal and ate at Great Plains for the first time since we left Ames in 1996.

Hasn't changed a bit and the pizza is still awesome.

Now, where to eat on Saturday when we come back up for the actual recital...

Great Plains still have that thick, wheat crust? Back in my college days I could put away a lot of pizza, but a couple of slices of theirs and I'd be full. Good to know they are still good and around... I miss Rocky Rococo's pizza and DaVinci's subs. Hickory Park is still good, but not the same as back in the 90's.

Didn't they give you honey to dip your crust into? Never liked the crust, but the rest was great. Still like Hickory Park.

Something like that. My sister is a huge fan of Great Plains, and we always had to go there whenever she got to pick the place. I like it occasionally, since there's nothing like it that I have found anywhere else.

I like Walabys for footballl season before/after the games, as you can see all the other games that are on. I agree on Hickory Park. Still good. Otherwise Ames is mostly chain restaurants. Machine Shed in Des Moines is pretty good, if you head that way... I try to find excuses to stop there after a football game on the way back to Omaha.

They do. I ate one piece and I was done.

We used to go to Wallaby's every Thursday night when MrsWx was going to school. Not far from our apt on Florida and always had fun. Cajun mayo...yum. Maybe we'll head there on Sat.

I have to disagree that Ames is mostly chains. Wallaby's. Dublin Bay. The Spice. Cafe Shi. House of Chen. Le's. CHC. La Fuente. Aunt Maude's. GeAngelos. The Cafe. Those are just a few awesome locally-owned selections.

Daughter must be in Waukee's Westside dance too ey? Wife and daughter went from Waukee up to Ames three nights this week. Makes for a long week.

Liked Great Plains, but absolutely loved and miss both DaVinci's Pizza and Rocky Roccoco's(sp). We actually planned a vacation so we would go through Lincoln a couple years ago so I could eat there again. Best pizza I have had.

I know I'm gonna get blasted for this, but I tried Great Plains one time and absolutely hated it. About 5 lbs of cheese on a pizza.

I had friends that worked at Great Plains, which was an added bonus, for I would trade them music enhancers for pizza.

Melted to perfection, each and every time. Toppings are loaded under that cheese as well.

Pizza in my area is average at best. Not one stands out in the IC area. I tend to make my own(once again, average at best) or go with the local pizza dude, who ironically calls his place Hawkeye Pizza & Steakhouse. I just call the place by the dude's first name.

I miss Great Plains. I loved playing stakeout, working the room for the next open booth.
