Great Plains Sauce & Dough

In Ames tonight for daughter's dance recital dress rehearsal and ate at Great Plains for the first time since we left Ames in 1996.

Hasn't changed a bit and the pizza is still awesome.

Now, where to eat on Saturday when we come back up for the actual recital...

Actually, while Great Plains' pizza hasn't changed, the restaurant has. They now have an upper level over one half of their space, so they can fit more people in.

I think some people equate all of Ames with South Duff...

Yeah, the chains are pretty much all on Duff. If you want some unique non-chain places, you have to get out into town a little. Great Plains, The Spice, Aunt Maude's, Olde Main Brewery on Main St. Cafe Shi and GeAngelos by the mall. The Cafe in Somerset. Wallaby's, West Town Pub and Pazzesco's Chophouse in west Ames. The Pammel Grocery and West St. Deli on the west side of campus are pretty good as well.

I have to disagree that Ames is mostly chains. Wallaby's. Dublin Bay. The Spice. Cafe Shi. House of Chen. Le's. CHC. La Fuente. Aunt Maude's. GeAngelos. The Cafe. Those are just a few awesome locally-owned selections.
Omaha use to have an Aunt Maude's also until it went under two years ago.

I took my wife to Great Plains about six months ago, she had never been and we decide to go somewhere else other than the Park while we were in Ames. It was exactly the same as i remembered it 11 years ago when i was still in school. I really liked and so did she, i will say we tend to eat more thin crust pizza, so it is definitely a change from that. Not saying i would want it every day, but it is something different in the pizza world

It was delicious for lunch an hour ago. Now if you'll excuse me while I go nap.

Bosco sticks at 2 a.m. after a night of drinking on Welch...

Out of all the delicious pizzas and subs you could pick, you picked the one thing they just take out of the freezer and put through the oven?? You're crazy.

I think I like Jeff's better than great plains, but I'm a little biased. I was a delivery driver there for a year. Nothing better than eating supper, second supper, midnight snack, 2 am snack, and 4 am snack during a 12 hour shift.

To answer your question of where to go tomorrow, my vote is Dublin Bay. That is the restaurant I recommend to anyone who is in Ames for one meal only. Excellent.
