Nope sorry, if they can’t also compete in football they aren’t welcomed. Football and mens basketball to a smaller degree drive conference changes. You only see this in sports like wrestling because only 4 schools in the big 12 that offer it.

If you're Gonzaga, do you even want that? They basically can schedule 4 or 5 higher profile games a year and print their passes for a 4 seed or better. A tiny school like that would not thrive in the Big 12 over time.

They've been really good under Mark Few. But he's not going to coach forever. So how confident are you that Gonzaga is a perennial program and not just a team with a good coach that stuck around? Seems risky to give them a permanent invitation when there isn't a guarantee they'll be a good program when he leaves.
Few retiring would worry me also, but after looking it up he is only 60 years old, no reason if he wants that he could not coach for another decade. Hard to say "yes" without knowing what type of money that Gonzaga will be making off the league BB contract, but say 10 to 12 million, I would be in favor of adding them, if for nothing else you are taking another avenue of expansion from the Pac 12 and adding a perennial powerhouse in basketball.

Gonzaga draws TV ratings, hasn't missed an NCAA tournament this millennium, and most of the travel onus would be on them. I really don't know how I feel about it, but if the Big 12 plans on going coast to coast, and thinks it'll make them money, I can certainly see why they would do it.

The last time they didn't make it to the round of 32 was 2008. The last time they didn't make the Sweet 16 was 2014. Both are very good.

Gonzaga plays a schedule with 14 easy conference wins a year. They get a one or two seed based on an inflated record and have to beat one very average team to get to the sweet sixteen. They join the B12, and get exposed to high level competition night in and night out, they’re losing 8-10 games a year right from the jump.

Lower seeds into the tournament means earlier losses. Now they start to look like just another program, their recruiting suffers, 8-10 losses turn into 10-14 losses, now any big time recruiting is wondering why they would want to go to a small school in the middle of nowhere with no close rival schools. Few retires or leaves and now we have a team going 10-20 or worse.

They've got a Top 25 basketball budget that only gets bigger with the 1/8th of a share they'd get (using 1/8th because that's what Wichita gets as basketball only in the AAC). They've got amazing facilities and a blank check from Nike.

If the Big 12 wants to continue to be THE basketball league, you take them.

Don’t hear much about the Shockers these days. How did moving up work out for them?

I’m sure Loyola is also dominating the A10 this year too

Wichita is a totally different deal. We're not going to have a situation there where Few is punching players and screaming the N word.

Loyola-Gonzaga is an awful, awful comparison. Gonzaga has been really good for 25 years and advanced deep into the tournament consistently. Loyola was built on one recruiting class and had been completely irrelevant for 35 years before that. They'd be in the same place in the Valley and the A10, especially this year, isn't appreciably better than the Valley.

Really good in a weak conference. Few has been at Gonzaga how long? Few is over 60 years old. No to Gonzaga. Do not need them. And they are potential dead weight on a geographic island.

Either way it’s a gamble. It doesn’t matter what Gonzaga has been. If Few retires in the next 15 years (which is not that many years when expanding a conference) you are taking the gamble they continue being what they are. It’s a big risk/big reward deal. Could be a home run or it could be a colossal flop once Few leaves.
