It cracks me up that people think just anyone can pick up a mic and do the job. It isn't that easy and there is an art to It. And you have to be committed to give up your time for what I'm sure is terrible pay.

And fewer and shorter TV timeouts were NEVER an option. The unfortunate reality is the Big 12 no longer has big eyeball schools and this is what they have to do to try to cut how much further behind they're falling in the budget department.

Fans: “Hooray, look at all this TV money our conference is getting! This is the big time, baby! WOOOOOHOOOOO!”

Also fans: “What the hell, all these 3 1/2 minute TV timeouts are just killing the game day experience. Man, this blows.”

I wasn't at the game so not sure, but if that's the case they could just have the PA do that or just have pre-recorded ads playing during timeouts.

She was doing the same **** the PA announcer usually does. Introducing the Delta Dental Smile Cam, etc. I don't think there was anything different than what we usually have except for the terrible voice.

During their podcast when CW was telling everyone not to ***** about it, Blum was diplomatic in saying that maybe having her do some things a bit different would be helpful. I'll also add that while Chris said that the audio system is hard to get used to, this woman has done similar things before. And I suspect that Iowa State would have allowed her to practice. She's getting paid for this ****.

So.....if you have to have that position, why not get Delta Dental sponsor something like 'Cyclone Trivia' and ask random fans easy questions like who scored the winning TD against OSU in 2011. Random fan says Jeff Woody. They play the clip with Delta Dental on the screen and everyone is excited. I think you could come up with some interesting or at least not stupid things for her to do.

Cyclones,

Let’s not let this distract us from the real problems we have. JP will do anything but let us have beer in the stadium. Direct your anger accordingly. Everytime this lady puts a microphone in your face yell we want beer.

I think this is spot on assessment. You can like/not like Jackie for her personality, but Iowa State did absolutely *NO* favors to help this succeed. Literally just took what we were doing but adding an energetic person on the mic before it all.

You need to do fan interaction type activities as mentioned. Trivia. Little mini-games with fans for a prize, etc. This is how you show personality of the host/reporter.

I will say. Broadcasting can make you look dull. When I'm training new hires for on-air, I always tell them you *HAVE* to go "over the top" with your expressions if you want to end up being dynamic on air. For some reason it doesn't translate as well as we think it does on-air.

Jackie definitely brings some energy. I've met Jackie a couple times, though I've never worked with her. Her personality she shows seems to be the genuine person she is.

I may or may not have applied...
Husband said if they had to do this, should have gotten you or Metinka. Could have thrown in weather too.

I think Audi would also have been good at this.

You think you're pointing out a contradiction in logic but you're really just saying what should be clear to most ticket-holding fans in this era of college athletics: it's a TV product now and the people who take the time and spend the money to show up and watch in person are a distant second.

Maybe people are starting to realize that and that's why the corners had empty seats for the opener of a highly anticipated season.

I thought Labor Day weekend probably affected attendance.

They were content to never try to win the game and lose 21-3. It was one of the most bizarre games I've ever watched. The stadium looked and sounded great on TV to start the game. By the end of it, I felt bad for the fans.
I had enough when we scored the last touchdown. I left because I knew it was going to be terrible after that.

We say we are the best fan bases. Yet we trash a woman doing her job in a message board. There's a line of criticism versus being a jerk. Many of these are jerks. Some of these people on this board need to step back and learn to be a decent person.

Some inappropriate comments from a minority of posters in this thread for sure, but lecturing the fan base over a negative reaction to this is a bit much. She has social media posts from within the last calendar year decked out in Hawkeye gear and proclaiming herself a Hawk fan. That's going to get a negative reaction from pretty much any passionate fan base.

Sounds well thought out. Justify being a jerk. Make sure you don't support wrestling program. You do know how many played at Iowa?

I'll sleep well at night knowing being a jerk isn't best way to live.

Not exactly sure.
You're assuming she's calling the shots on what gets done. Just her mic not being obnoxiously loud compared to every other sound from the video board would have made her way less annoying.

In general, people think they are way better at things than they are and they can just pick something up and do it just because it looks easy. Every person who golfs keeps thinking they'll get better because they hit that one good shot that one time and now they'll do it consistently. Everyone thinks they can do a better job than the meteorologist because a week out they said it was going to be X and revised throughout the week to Y and Y happened but it wasn't X so the weather person is a moron.

As a society we are quick to ***** and presumptive about what we know without actually knowing the facts. Too many people think their elementary understanding makes them subject matter experts. Do I think say Georges Niang could do the job? With some break in absolutely! Am I naive enough to believe you could just drop anyone into that role? Absolutely not. Do I think it will be better in 3 weeks? Yes. Will many people still hate it? Yes. Do people typically dislike change? Yes.
Do I have street cred since I’ve announced games, meets, etc on the radio and online streamed for several years and had to learn what to do to keep audiences involved?

So, yes, I do have a general idea of what I’m talking about. She had direction, but in that direction, you need to understand how to intertwine that with the situation you are in. Basically know your audience and know how to cater the message you want to get to them. She did not know her audience and that is why she failed miserably.

Maybe beer in the stadium will get people drunk enough to go to the bathroom so we don’t have to listen to an in-game host that nobody wants or likes!
