What is your favorite genre of books? Are you a reader? If so, what kind is most likely to fill your bookshelf?

I am not a reader typically. However, if I do succumb to it, I like horror, suspense, and quick read finance. If a book gets too wordy, I lose interest and the pages start to blank out.

Two older books I loved were Bram Stokers Dracula and The Relic.

Note: On the horror/suspense, I struggle to get into Stephen King books as they fall in to that wordy bucket, so I typically wait until its a movie or show.

Reading is a huge part of my personality. And I've started to do it even more to avoid doom scrolling. In January, I read 20 books. Some were short (under 300 pages), but 20 is 20. I enjoy romcoms and spicy romance the most, but I also like women's fiction and the occasional thriller/true crime. I also do audiobooks and tend to stick to memoirs/non-fiction for that.

I like quasi-quirky books like Hitchhiker's Guide.

I just started James by Percival Everett and it has a little bit of that in it too.

Two basic types.

1. Biographies. Generally a musician/performer I'm a fan of. Also did a deep dive into true survival stories about 10 years ago. Shipwrecks, Airplanes, Lost at Sea, Extreme weather, Military escapes, etc.

2. Once in a while... SciFi. But if it's a time travel story I'm in!

I have a kindle unlimited subscription and I read pretty much everything. Looking back on my read list I do see it is dominated by End of the World/Zombie apocalypse genre and SyFy/Fantasy genre (probably like 70% between the 2). I guess I use reading as an escape.

Dear penthouse,... oh you said books.

I am a fan of thrillers with a little bit of sci-fi. James Rollins, jack du brul and Matthew reilly. The Dresden files are good too.

Mostly literary fiction. I'm a big Donna Tartt fan, nobody develops characters as well as she does IMO. I'm also a fan of writers like Richard Russo and Dennis Lahane who bring a blue-collar street grittiness to their works.

I also like non-fiction, biographies, etc. If you're even a little bit into music, I'd highly recommend Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements by Bob Mehr. Really, really good.

Serious non-fiction (but not the self-help crapola).

You can pick it up, put it down, read a little, read a lot, don't have to remember an obscure plot or dreadful torture porn rendered in the sloppy writing that passes for contemporary fiction these days and lurking on the next page.

Greatest Hits:

1. UnEqual - Eugenia Cheng
2. Everything is Tuberculosis - John Greene
3. Patriot - Alexi Navalny
4. Living as a Bird - Vinciane Despret
5. Songs in a Weary Throat - Pauli Murray
6. A View from the Stars - Liu Cixin
7. Over the Edge of the World - Laurence Bergreen (about Magellan)
8. Most everything by Oliver Sacks, but especially his last book of essays written just before his death: "Gratitude"

Many more out there, of course. Fortunately.

Love the Harry potter series. However my fave book genres are: Crime and mystery, autobiographies, Court room dramas and real life inspirational books. Also like reading about WW II.

Authors: Michael Connelly, Lee Child, CJ Box, William Kent Krueger, Sheldon Siegel... All awesome writers for book series.

Historical non-fiction especially when it is written in a narrative style.

Also, every fall I read 19th century/early 20th century ghost stories (e.g. the monkey’s paw). I don’t really like horror, but they’re just a little spooky and fits the season well.

I'm a voracious reader -70-100 books a year somehow

#1 -Time Travel -I've pretty well exhausted all the good ones so haven't had a good one in awhile
#2 -Assassin/Spy series -Jack Ryan Jr, Mitch Rapp, Scott Harvath, Bob Lee Swagger, Pike Logan, The Gray Man, Jack Reacher etc..
#3 -Branching more into Sci-Fi -Project Hail Mary was my favorite read of the past couple of years

I go between:
- Biographies. Isaacson, McCullough, Meacham especially and autobiographies of political leader and music artists. From Ben Franklin to Paul Stanley.
- Sports. Read CW's Fanatic & loved it.
- History. Especially the 1960s. Next up for me is Boom by Tom Brokaw
- Military History. Viet Nam & WWII. Highly recommend The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
- Self Improvement. Just finished The Talent Code by Coyle
- Finance & Investing. The Art of Spending Money by Housel
And I'll read one or two novels per year. Orphan X this year, reread Dracula last year. Read the Game of Thrones series a couple years ago (hence the profile pic).

Strictly fiction here. Mostly thriller/horror/mystery.
  1. The Dark Tower Series - Stephen King was unlike anything I had ever read
  2. The Passage Series - Justin Cronin. Very King like with more of a "literary" approach.
  3. Anxious People - Fredrick Backman. A super fast read about a bank robbery, hostage situation, and idiots.
  4. Incursion - Blake Crouch. Was recommended this one on Goodreads and took a chance. Really cool story that doesn't use too much brain power.
  5. Starter Villain - John Scalzi. Spy thriller with cats.

During COVID I went all-in on what I call rom com books. I find that I can usually tell by the price of the ebook whether it’ll be good or not. It has to be at least $9.99, preferably $11.99 for me to read it. At that price point, the writing is usually good enough to make me believe that the famous singer falls for the normal person or the handyman falls for the heartbroken widow or the rival shop owners are true loves. Below that price and even I don’t buy it. I feel very strongly about this theory.

Other than that I’ll occasionally dive into John Grisham type books or true crime stuff.

I too am a sucker for crime drama, courtroom chaos, action/adventure type books. Right now, I'm reading a book from a series about a Wyoming game warden, who always gets into trouble for stepping outside his job and solving murders or other crimes. I'll read anything from Lee Child, David Baldacci (if his books weren't so darned expensive. I can't see paying $14.95 for a Kindle book) Blake Banner, CJ Box. I used to be the same way about Michael Connelly, but he's written so many books, I get lost in the conundrum of have I read this one or not?
