Friday 5: Big 12 expansion

I wish the Big12 and ACC would consider merging TV rights but keeping their own separate conference identity. An ACC/Big12 channel would be able to offer a lot of programming and the two conferences would cover the midwest, TX, southeast and northeast.

In football each team could play one non-conference game against a team from the other conference. You could even have a joint conference basketball tournament which would be a huge tv draw and revenue generator. You could also then consider the 2 conferences as 1 for sports like wrestling.

It would essentially be a super conference for TV & scheduling purposes but allow each of the 2 conferences to keep their own governing body, traditions and identity. The BIG or SEC would never consider this but expansion has kind of come down to a waiting game to see who will fold first - the Big12 or ACC. This would certainly change the landscape a bit.

I would welcome back any of the Big 8 defectors (a&m can **** off).

Arkansas would be great, but not realistic. Same with some of the PAC schools.

I would rather stay at 10, but that's not likely, so I would just add Cinci and Memphis and stay at 12 for a few years.

1. Cinci
2. Memphis
3. Colorado State
4. Houston
5. BYU

The problem you have in your proposal is that the Big 12 has a very good TV contract. ACC does not have as good of a contract. So Big 12 teams would get less under your proposal.

What will happen most likely is that the Big 12 takes 4 teams. Because they can get the same pro rata share for each additional team. The New 4 teams will then get a negotiated lower payment than the existing 10 teams for several years. The existing 10 teams will also get the windfall for the CCG. We are likely talking about an additional $10 million per team for the existing 10 teams for a while. That puts us at a level that is at least equal or higher than the B1G and the SEC when you add in each school's 3rd Tier Rights on top of that.

Texas pulls a lot of weight. At the same time, some Texas schools might balk at the addition of Houston. Texas would likely have to agree to an extension of the GOR to get other schools to take Houston. Assuming that happens, it is most probable that the teams would be Houston, BYU, and Cincinatti. And you need a 4th team. Not sure that Memphis or Colorado State even tip the scales at all. Not sure UCF does either.

IMO, it becomes more probable that UConn comes into play. With the addition of BYU and Houston, there is a perception that their addition improves the overall football strength of the conference. UConn has exceptional Basketball programs. The Big 12 would be considered to be possibly the best basketball conference in the country. Also UConn has much stronger academics than others. And it does open up the corridor into the NYC area and the Northeast. UConn would have surely been in the ACC except that Boston College has blackballed them to be included as a member.

Am I the only one that thinks the texas schools and okie st wont let houston come to the big12 after they let tcu in and saw the success they had

Texas schools (plural) do not speak in unison. Only the Texas school (singular) has any power in the Big 12 administration.

With Texas politicians involved in the process it appears that Houston is all but guaranteed to get in the Big XII. I also think Cincinnati is right behind them. I hope the conference expands by four teams.

I would be for just kicking Texas out, adding Houston and 4 others, signing a new Grant of Rights and a network. Make it so everyone is paid equally. Look at all the crappy Big 10 schools that get the same money as Michigan and Ohio State. Keeps the conference stable, and we can finally just stop talking about it. Texas needing to be the big stick is just a constant rock in our shoes.

Think BIG:

The Big 12 and SEC merge. Arkansas and Mizz are added to the BIG 12 side (west) and the remaining SEC teams are the (east). The true super conference.

Keeping it real:
BYU
Cin
Houston
Col St....a solid replacement for Colorado and links up with BYU.

That BB tourney would be CRAY. Alternate the tourney between KC and somewhere out east (too lazy to look up where ACC holds there tourney). It's too bad that FB is the driver because I love the BB portion of your idea.

How is it BC would haven't the power to keep UCONN out of the ACC? That's like saying ISU could keep out Houston.

I'm any event I would take UCONN every time over Memphis.
