fannies in the stands...

I just saw last night that Cincy had a "record" 35,000 in attendance for their game with WV. That seems crazy, especially for the no. 5 team in the country. 43,000 doesn't sound too bad, especially for November. I've been to games where we barely made 30,000.

People who didn't grow up farming don't understand the situation farmers across this State are in. Sure, Iowa has fans who farm, but they don't donate and buy season tickets. I guarantee we lose 4-6,000 fans just due to harvest. People act like it's an excuse, but it's the absolute turth of the matter. My dad harvested 5 days in October. They absolutely have to pick corn right now, and can't afford to take the day off to watch football. Many farmers across this state are in that same position.

I thought the crowd was great ... I mean we need a little persective, it was a 3-win team vs a 5-win team on a very down ticket sales year.

To get 43,000 on a chilly day is great.

There's no way we lose that many. According to the Farm Bureau, there are only about 40,000 true farmers left in the state. By the time you take out the percentage who are not ISU fans, or even football fans for that matter, along with the percentage of people who are ISU fans which don't buy tickets, and there's no way that number is more than several hundred. This also doesn't take into account the reality that many unused tickets are given to friends and family who wouldn't come without free tickets.

People miss games all fall for a variety of reasons. Weddings by far cause more people to miss games than harvest season.

And, in case any of you were wondering what the average attendance for the rest of the Big12 since 1998:

84,187 Texas
79,709 Oklahoma
79,498 Nebraska
76,878 Texas A&M
55,930 Missouri
49,327 Colorado
47,988 Texas Tech
46,869 Kansas State
44,147 Iowa State
42,896 Oklahoma State
40,194 Kansas
32,797 Baylor

Right now we are currently 9th.
I'd say were pretty even with 6 of the schools, and way behind the big 4, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas A&M. Missouri is slowly moving towards the top 4. Baylor just sucks.

IMO the problem is the gap in Alum. There was some bad football in the 80s and 90s and no reason for students to go to games in that time period, they didnt get hooked. Those are the people now that have some money and time that should be going to game but didnt get the bug back then. Granted there are some that attend games but that age group is what is missing from FB games. If ISU makes a run maybe they will get that bug. There seem to be a lot of 50ish and older fans and 35 and younger fans that attend games regulary.

Well, we should have an exciting offense next season, so I sure hope that there are a heck of a lot more season tickets sold.

And yes, I was at the game. Section 20 was vocal, and standing most of the game.

In addition, the economy during that period was probably worse than it is now which forced a lot of people out of state to find jobs and never came back.

Either way, Iowa State averages about 12,000 more fans per game than a decade ago. Thats a pretty impressive jump.

does anyone know what smelled like fish in section 18 in the first half?? I literally was waiting to look up wind an just see some old man with a folding table and a filet knife just hacking away at a pile of fresh mackerel. WTF?

I agree, winning will do that. It is going to get better in coming years, the product on the feild is going to be worth it.

I thought that number seemed high, but I personally know 4 people that didn't make the game because of harvest. I don't farm and only know a handful that do, so who knows?

when you take into account all the people that are involved with harvest 40,000 + family members + temp hires ... it could get to be a lot of people.

I don't care what anyone says..good crowd today. Very vocal and sounded great on the radio. Like someone already said..most programs (and several in the top 25) would KILL to have our crowds.

On average, yes, but right now you have farmers who spent 90% of October sitting on their *** waiting to harvest. Now that the sun is shining, they have to make hay, and they just don't have the time to drop everything and watch a football game.

Yes, kind of weird.

Figured it was time to finally register here and make a comment about some people not thinking that harvest affects our attendance. First off this fall no way weddings are affecting our attendance more than the late harvest. I for one am a season ticket holder that was in a combine today instead of at the game. Guess who else was not at the game, my wife and two kids as well as my parents who are also season ticket holders. The group that I tailgate with is about 15 of us whom are all connected to agriculture and none of them were there either because they were either combining or having to work at the coop etc. A few other people that I know that are season ticket holders that called me today to see if I was at game because they were in the field as well and wanted to know if we were tailgating instead. I know just off the top of my head I know of 20 die hard season ticket holders that were not at the game today because of the late harvest. Most people just think it is just the farmer who can't make it but it is the whole ag support economy that is working right now too. Lots of people across the state.
