Everything Jakolby Long thread

Fred didn't set Prohm up very well beyond this year but look at the guys Fred replaced every year, he still got it done. Prohm shouldn't get any excuses or leeway. That said, IMO all we'll need to be a tourney team next year is for the young bigs to step up. Between Ernst, Carter, Young, Malou and Lard, I'd say we have potential at those spots. The other possibility is that we see more CSP's "small ball". I know he was quoted saying that in the big 12 we will need to be big and physical but remember the Mizzou teams from a few years back? They played 5 wings a lot of the time and won the league.

I would say Fred left a three month recruiting void. It is partially Fred's fault for next year. We were not able to recruit while he was playing games with the Bulls. Or maybe we were not trying that hard to recruit after Matty left town.

You know strength of schedule matter is basketball unlike football right? Having a weaker schedule does not help our chances of being a tournament team any more than having a strong schedule hurts it.

Yeah, but we have home games next year instead of road games. Beating Iowa on the road will still be a top 150 win at worst. Big 12 will be good enough for the foreseeable future to keep our SOS up, not worried about our SOS just need to finish top 6 in Big 12 and get 20 wins and we'll be fine.

It doesn't matter how good or bad next year's team might be, you don't ever turn down, or feel bad that you have to play Kentucky.

I would make the argument that if Iowa St is a bubble team next year, then playing Kentucky helps them, win or lose, come selection time.

Disagree. We will be a tournament team no matter if Monte stays or not. We were so bad for so long that people forget how average you can be and make the field of 64.

Sorry but there are way too many unknowns at this point to say that IMO.

If you look at the averages so far through 6 games, we will be returning 13 ppg + Burton.

Between Jackson, Burton and Malou, there won't be any room for error. If one of those guys turn out to be marginal role players, we're going to struggle if Monte leaves and we add nothing further.

Respectfully, I disagree with your disagree. You really think an average team can make the field? That probably means finishing in the top 5 (or 6) of the big12. Don't see that happening if Carter/Ernst/Young/Lard have as FAR to go as what everyone is suggesting. No Monte and no impact big makes me agree with the poster you responded to. I really think the main reason Monte won't return is having to play with whats left in the front court more so than his draft position. Hope I'm wrong. On a side note, and I don't want to get started a useless banter about TJ or Matt A, but I was always told that Matt had a pipeline and knew about impact transfers and was recruiting them before other teams even had a clue. Him leaving hurt (in that regard).

We aren't the only team in the Big 12 losing players. League won't be as good next year and that will help us.

OU loses Hield, Spangler, Hield and Cousins.
Baylor loses Gathers, Prince, Medford.
OSU loses Forte and Newberry
KU will lose some good players.

TCU/KSU/TTU/OSU will still be below us.

We we could still be top 4-5 in the Big 12.

There are two big unknown factors that will influence how good we are next year:

1. Does Monte stay or go? This is huge and probably about 50/50.
2. Do we land any immediate transfers?

Without adding any more impact transfers and if Monte leaves, I'd say bubble team is likely.

If Monte stays, we will be a solid tourney team.

If Monte stays and we add one more impact guy, then we could be a top 15-25 team again.

This.

The thing is, ISU won't be paired up with UK because there is supposed to be a dropoff. It's a moot point to even discuss.

Oh so this is the Everything (kind of but not really related to) Jakolby Long Thread

Since this seems to be six degrees of Jakolby Long, I am looking forward to seeing how Nick Weiler-Babb's game develops next year.

Winning 20 games should be very easy for this group. Morris is staying (yes, he is), Thomas, Burton, Cooke are all solid players, Carter and Ernst should make big strides, and Malou is going to be an absolute monster for the Cyclones as well. I think we are capable of finishing in the top 4 of the conference next year just fine.

I like how everyione assumes we will be bad next year. Obviously prob not going to be top 5-10 in the country but I dont think we will be Mc Doormat years bad - Give Prohm a little respect here he will hacve that team filled up and bring in the players needed to compete.

Not expecting to compete with Kentucky and assuming we'll be bad next season are completely different things.

We'll still be a good ranked team. The panic about next year is generally sad.

Agree. We'll have as many as 3 potential pro prospects on the team(assuming Monte stays). Let's just enjoy this year's team while we can.

My gut feeling about next years team is that it will probably end up being like the early Hoiberg teams, meaning somewhere between a 7-11 seed type of team in the tournament; that's my expectation anyways

Always someone to overstate the discussion...nobody is in panic mode. And actually, I hope we won't be able to settle who is closer to being more accurate, meaning it will be a moot point because we will have gotten that impact transfer big and Monte is still here. Yep, like Jakolby Long as was the original topic.

Assuming Malou is one...who is the other?
